I am excited to announce and welcome our September speaker, Jeff Cogswell. Jeff is a software developer and trainer, and owner of Cogsmedia Training. He has 25 years of experience in software development, having focused the last 10 years almost exclusively on web development. About eight years ago he realized JavaScript was soon going to be required knowledge of any web developer, and began mastering it. He has written over a dozen books, including C++ All-in-One for Dummies.

I've asked him to help us understand how he uses JavaScript plus what excites him about new JavaScript technologies.

This is a Toledo Geek Dinner meeting with presentations from member Web Pros. This could be a technique or something you want to share if you can do so smartly. The restaurant is providing a special menu with a range of affordable meal items from $8 - $14.

Amy Fidler & Jenn Stucker – Graphic Design SWEAT Program

Amy Fidler and Jenn Stucker are co-founders & organizers of the Summer Workshop for Experimentation and Thought (SWEAT).

Amy received her BFA from BGSU and MFA from School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Visual Communication and Jenn earned her BFA from BGSU and her MFA from Eastern Michigan University, Graphic Design. Both are dedicated faculty in the Graphic Design department at Bowling Green State University and co-founders of AIGA Toledo.

The SWEAT program founded by Amy and Jenn creates an outlet to give designers and design students the opportunity to collaborate, create compelling, poignant work and engage in some summer fun. And as with all good, hard work, SWEAT is required.

Design Briefs is a partnership between AIGA Toledo and the Toledo Museum of Art.

The event is an opportunity for local businesses and organizations to introduce a challenge their company is facing to our community’s designers, developers, and creatives to receive concentrated Design Thinking feedback.

During the event, local business owners, organizations, or aspiring entrepreneurs present their story along with a specific business challenge they’d like to overcome, receiving concentrated Design Thinking feedback from a panel of design and business professionals. The attendees will then have the opportunity to interact with the presenters during breakout sessions, as they collaboratively explore ideas on how to overcome the highlighted obstacles.

The theme of our second bi-annual Design Briefs event is “The Great Outdoors.”

Vex-a-what? The How & Why: Designing City Flags...Alex Martinez is on a mission to make city flags better, especially in Toledo. Flags are ubiquitous symbols of civic pride and are often designed, frankly, pretty terribly. But they don't have to be.

Alex is a web designer and front-end developer at Whitelabel, a Toledo digital agency. After living in Washington, DC for several years, where its city flag is a sign of local pride, Alex returned to his hometown of Toledo with a dream to help get its own flag a redesign.

His talk will reveal the five basic principles of vexillology – the study of flags – and share the power they have to unify a city’s brand and community.

Discover the world of Atomic Design Systems and how to use them to create stronger user interface elements. Learn how to create designs physically or digitally and apply them to your own projects.

Join us in welcoming Jessica Setter who is passionate about Design and Accessibility for our mobile worlds. She specializes in solutions bridging problems with art.

This talk is based on her current work in Accessibility Design. She will use visual examples then discussing the importance of conceptualizing accessibility early on when planning platforms. In between examples holding moments to ask people what differences there may be and how those differences affect the results of using a platform.

Join ICS and the BGSU School of Art in welcoming Antionette Carroll, an internationally recognized graphic designer, community activist, public speaker, and entrepreneur.

In her public lecture, Carroll will introduce the principles of Equity-Centered Community Design. She will discuss her work as the Founder and CEO of Creative Reaction Lab, a non-profit, youth-led, community-centered social impact design collaborative, to demonstrate how graphic design can be utilized as a vital tool in redesigning entire communities and cities to be more racially diverse, inclusive, and equitable.

Come to BGSU to learn techniques and approaches to Equity-Centered Community Design. By the end of this workshop, you will have the tools to work toward transforming local communities within your own place of employment. In this four-hour intensive workshop, we will examine the ways we plan and create programs to achieve more inclusive and equitable outcomes. This workshop is for those who want to learn how structure their own organizations, businesses, and communities to be more inclusive.

Registration Fee for the professional-focused workshop is $45.

Comics are finally coming of age as an artistic and literary form. Now this once-maligned medium of expression is poised for new opportunities, thanks to a mutating media environment and a potential revolution in visual education.

Author and comics artist Scott McCloud shines a light on these and other fascinating trends -- and demonstrates why every visual choice we make matters -- in a fast-moving cascade of images and ideas.

As part of Jeep fest, we will be talking about car design.

FCA is sending some concepts of its new Jeep Gladiator pickup launched in April. The automaker also is sending two of its top Jeep stars to give presentations as part of a Jeep Speaker Series sponsored by SSOE Inc. and held at a stage in the convention center.

Giving a presentation at 2 p.m. will be Toledoan Taylor Langhals, the chief exterior designer of the Gladiator and the designer who created the (heart) 4-1-9 tribute found exclusively on Gladiator truck beds to honor his hometown.

At 2:30 p.m., Mr. Langhals will be followed by Mark Allen, FCA head of Jeep Design, the man who oversaw the entire design process of the Gladiator and whose job it is to oversee production design of all Jeep vehicles.

Join Michigan UXPA for our contribution to Detroit Month of Design and learn a systematic framework to plan, promote, and launch a design system as well as how to create buy-in for one throughout a company’s culture.

The 2019 Edwin H. Simmons Creative Minds Series welcomes Chicago-based Architect Iker Gil and Designer Rick Valicenti. They will present Interdisciplinary Collaboration: A Bigger Idea at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 12 in the Thomas B. and Kathleen M. Donnell Theatre, Wolfe Center for the Arts.

Creativity involves seeing, thinking and innovating. Through interdisciplinary collaboration different disciplines come together to share their perspectives, ideas and knowledge in the process of creation.

BGSU alumnus Rick Valicenti and Iker Gil, who are always in search of the possibility of doing things differently in their individual practices, identified interdisciplinary collaboration as a means of impacting design.

Iker Gil and Rick Valicenti will address this from their Individual perspectives and professional experiences.
