Advanced Front-End Development Workflows with Hanson, Inc.
Hanson Inc

The Toledo Web Professionals presents "Advanced Front-End Development Workflows".

With so many great tools available to front-end web developers these days it can sometimes be difficult to understand how they all fit together. Deciding on a workflow that you’re happy with is often a very personal endeavor, but getting started isn’t always easy.

Both enterprises and start-ups will need to take advantage of these tools as the demand for features and quick delivery rises. Building applications with these tools can speed development and deployment, simplify project organization, and automate repetitive tasks allowing developers to focus on core features.

We'll be following Hanson as they review a dizzying array of projects with advanced front-end JavaScript components and discuss about how they're improving their workflow with tools like Node/NPM, Grunt, Yeoman, Bower, Require.js, and Handlebars.

Dave Rodriguez is Director of Front End Development at Hanson Inc. Wrangling interactive designers comes naturally to Dave, who is also an avid travel and nature photographer. When not working his interactive magic for Hanson’s clients, he can be spotted in his natural habitat: at the zoo. He has photographed animals at 15 zoos in the U.S., Canada and Mexico in the last three years.

Hosted by Hanson Inc., a full service digital agency offering digital marketing solutions to many national brands including Delta Faucet, Owens Corning, and Eaton. Based locally in Maumee and boasting some of the best talent Toledo has to offer, we're very excited to have Hanson Inc. hosting this awesome event!

Road Trip: Tour of Menlo Innovations
Menlo Innovations (Ann Arbor)

We're planning a tour for an Agile business in Ann Arbor that develops product and web interfaces. We're still working on the details but I'd like to see 20-30 members participate in this visitation. Let's meet at Caio! Ristorante, 6064 Monroe Street, Sylvania, OH from 2:30 PM to 2:45 PM to then carpool to Ann Arbor. The team at Menlo Innovations are expecting us at 4:00 PM, which will give us a chance to see the factory in action. We will need to leave a little earlier to assure parking for members.

Building Your Own Collaborative Editing Web Forms For Free
Seed Coworking

Have your business users ever said, "we have this Excel form that we need to turn into a web form"? So you, as a full-stack web developer, turn it into a HTML form with an AJAX POST to save the data to a database table in the standard CRUD model. It works well enough, but then the users said, "we really need simultaneous editing for everyone in the office." Now you're in trouble because you're trying to reinvent Google Docs / Sheets, which are very complex. How do those collaborative editing tools really work?

We will look at the Google Realtime API, which uses Operational Transformation to automatically synchronize a document between multiple simultaneous editors. Everything you know about distributed version control systems applies to this situation, but now you need to make it work seamlessly for users who have never heard of "git rebase". The client and server implementation of Operational Transformation is very challenging.

Alternatives to Operational Transformation (OT) include Differential Synchronization (DS, aka. 3-way merge), Conflict-free Replicated Data Type (CRDT), and plain old Last Write Wins (LWW). For any of these methods, the critical elements include websockets, message queues, and persistent data storage. This presentation will include a demonstration of a simple implementation of collaborative editing with free, locally hosted software only.

Toledo Web Professionals - The Cybersecurity Roadshow with Tom Germain

This traveling cybersecurity workshop seeks to bring cybersecurity awareness to creators, developers, and businesses.

You've read the headlines about the latest hack affecting millions of web users and/or credit card holders, but did you know that, possibly and unwittingly, your own website, router or web connected device could be part of a botnet used in attacks?

What never ceases to amaze is how many businesses and individuals fail to protect themselves from the hordes of hackers working in a multi-billion dollar a year illegal industry. This workshop aims to awaken you to the many dangers as well as to offer real solutions to defending yourself and your business from what could be a disastrous breach of security.

• Profile of a "black hat" hacker and what they target

• Types of attacks and how they're achieved

• Legal aspects (liability, etc.)

• Social engineering

Exploring Craft CMS with Rachel Rine and Madhouse
Seed Coworking

Created in the shadows by ExpressionEngine expats, Craft CMS is an ultra flexible content management system that makes designers, developers AND clients happy. From custom fields, to Twig templates, Craft makes no assumptions about what your content could or should look like. Craft CMS is eye-opening for Wordpress developers, sanity-restoring for Joomla and Drupal developers, and makes building websites fun again.

Rachel Rine, our guest speaker, will be walking us through getting started with Craft and showing off some incredible examples of implementation in both the backend and in templating.

About Rachel Rine: Rachel spends most of her time churning out code as an interactive designer/developer for Madhouse, where she enjoys optimizing performance, accessibility, and usable design. When she’s not grumbling about #serverstruggs, you can probably find her listening to econ podcasts, playing board games, and trying to keep her plants alive.

Best Practices for API-Driven React Applications with Scott Radcliff
Seed Coworking

React is on fire! Companies around the world are trying to take advantage of the way React makes web applications fast, responsive, and easier to develop. That said, what about the API? If your API is slow or not optimized, that could severely effect your cool new React app and end up as the choke point for negative customer experiences.

In this talk, we'll build a React app that is driven by an API written in Rails, though we'll cover a great deal of best practices, examples, and considerations that can be applied to a client-server architecture written in any language.

You'll leave this talk with an understanding of the APIs role in React applications, things to look for when working with or building an API, and practical knowledge to take back into your workplace or personal projects.

Speaker Bio: Scott Radcliff is an expert software developer in the Toledo area. He's built web applications using numerous programming languages and technology stacks accomplishing a variety of tasks from the very simple to enterprise-grade. He enjoys building applications that help people do things that they previously couldn't, and he loves Ruby.

Scott is a freelance developer and is currently taking on new customers.

Save Our Planet (TWP)
Service Spring Corporation

This month in honor of Earth Day we welcome Jeff Green of AccuShred to add us regarding recycling of all materials. In addition to his talk we will be able to turn over any electronics for him to take away.

In addition, we are co-promoting this event with the Nerd Summit team who will also participate. Which is why we will meet at Service Spring Corporation in Maumee. Following our combined event we will have an opportunity to tour the Service Spring facility which to my eyes is impressive. The location is designed for expansion, it is high tech with growth in the mobile software development, training and web commerce industries as well as in manufacturing and engineering.

Event organizers have agreed to spring for pizza and drinks to share during the talk. Following the event, if anyone desires we'll carry on the conversation at a local club.

Using agile to transform “clients” into “partners”
Service Spring Corporation

The May Toledo Web Professionals meetup will feature Nick DeNardis.

Working with clients in a freelance or agency setting has its unique challenges. Getting client feedback at each stage of a project is inefficient, too much time passes between feedback and next design next steps. This type of workflow increases the possibility of mistakes and false expectations of deadlines. Nick will talk about creating an agile workflow in your environment to transform clients in to partners on a project. This shift in relationship can have a major impact on the speed, accuracy and level of work produced. Every team is different and introducing agile practices can lead to resistance. Nick will explore techniques to bring an agile workflow to a team for faster feedback loops and to produce better work.

Nick DeNardis leads the strategy, execution, and implementation of all public facing digital communications for Wayne State University, including the websites, social media and digital signage around campus. His team is also responsible for creation and maintenance of several university-wide tools including the content management system, events calendar, RSVP system, HTML email creator, form creator and short URL system. He and his team pride themselves on research based decisions, creation of fully cross browser and accessible solutions.

He previously hosted a video podcast called EDU Checkup, where he reviewed higher education websites from the perspective of a first time visitor. The podcast examined the websites visuals, information and code which resulted in an A-F “grade” overall. Nick is also an organizer of Refresh Detroit, he is the technical director for TEDxDetroit, avid conference speaker and teacher for Girl Develop It.

We are also looking for volunteers to help out. If you're proficient in a particular distribution, please send an email to with your full name, email, and which distribution you'd like to volunteer to provide help with. Lists of distros and volunteers will be posted on our website and handed out at the event.

PGP Key-signing Party

We will also be having a PGP key-signing party at the installfest. If you currently use a PGP key and would like to get it digitally signed by others at the meeting, please email with your full name (as it appears on your key), any e-mail addresses associated with your key, your key fingerprint, and the full URL where your public key may be retrieved. Lists of keys will be handed out at the meeting for anyone participating.

Other Notes
