Enhancing the Spirit of Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Monroe County
Monroe Community College

Monroe County Community College will host the first in a series of roundtable discussions on entrepreneurship and innovation in Monroe County starting at 6 p.m. Wednesday Jan. 22 in the board room at the La-Z-Boy Center, 1555 S. Raisinville Rd., Monroe.

The program is open to the public.

MCCC President Dr. Kojo Quartey will moderate the roundtable series, entitled "Enhancing the Spirit of Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Monroe County." The topic of the first roundtable discussion will be the establishment of a county-wide business plan/entrepreneurship competition to be hosted by MCCC. The competition would focus on Monroe County's effort to nurture future entrepreneurs – both youths and adults.

Those who are expected to participate also include Jeff Beamsley, Doug Chaffin, Dr. Sanjib Chowdhury, John Joy, Barry Kinsey, Paul Knollman, Tim Lake, Robert Oklejas, Dr. Stephen Reed, Mark Scharboneau, Dirk VanHeyst and U.S. Rep Tim Walberg (R-Mich.).

Future Advancements in Medical Technology

ProMedica Innovations will host its inaugural Planting the Seeds of Innovation Medical Technology and Commercialization Conference Thursday, May 1 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Perrysburg.

National and regional experts will gather to discuss ways to accelerate the development and commercialization of medical technology to foster economic growth in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan and improve patient care around the world.

“We will address a wide range of issues important to individuals and companies that are interested in medical devices and health information technologies,” said John Pigott, MD, medical director of ProMedica Innovations. “ProMedica is a strong proponent of economic development in our region and ProMedica Innovations provides a platform to support invention locally.”

State Rep. Barbara Sears (R., Monclova Township) will open the conference by addressing the importance of innovation in this region. Panel discussions and presentations throughout the day will focus on innovation challenges, collaboration and opportunities. The conference keynote presentation features a discussion on innovation on a local and national stage with Randy Oostra, DM, president and CEO of ProMedica, and Toby Cosgrove, MD, president and CEO of Cleveland Clinic.

ProMedica Innovations, which is part of the Cleveland Clinic’s Healthcare Innovation Alliance, works to facilitate and accelerate medical innovations. Formed in 2012, its aim is to provide ProMedica doctors, employees and affiliated inventors with support for their ideas and inventions to improve patients’ health and well-being.

Technology Bridge Between Radio and Health Care

David Kennedy, who has had a distinguished career within the media industry, will present “The Technology Bridge Between Radio and Health Care: Questions and Innovations” at 2:30 p.m. on March 23 in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union Theater (Room 206).

His talk will address how a simple question to extend radio listenership to mobile devices led to much more. The process resulted in an increased awareness that the same technology could be used to advance health care practices including new capabilities, greater precision and improved outcomes.
