This weekend is the last event of the semester for the BGSU ACM student chapter and Bowling Green Women in Computing (BGWIC).

We will be celebrating the graduating seniors, eating great food, and having a great Saturday with your favorite programming friends!

The menu will include a grill out with kabobs, chips, drinks, and fruit salad.

Jim Youll of Twitter returns to the area. This time he is presenting to the BGSU Student ACM Chapter.

Jim, a Senior Site Reliability Engineer, will be discussing his work and experience gained from the Twitter Headquarters in San Francisco. Youll is a 1988 BGSU graduate (CS major, Photojournalism minor) who joined the Twitter team a year ago.

Myles pizza and soda will be provided.

Hear Bethany Ruiz from The Andersons discuss her knowledge regarding An Enterprise Business System (SAP). Ms. Ruiz is also a professor here at BGSU as she teaches a course in MIS. Food and drinks will be provided

Whether you are early in your college career or getting ready to graduate it is never too early to think about what is coming next, "The Real World"! Come find out what types of things you can do with your computer science or equivalent degree from somebody who has been a developer, architect, manager, executive, trainer, consultant, author, entrepreneur and yet still writes code every day. Learn what skills employers are looking for and what things you can be doing to prepare yourself for your first job from somebody who interviews, hires and trains a dozen or more recent college grads every year. This event could have a profound effect on your career as a similar event did on the speaker's some 20 years ago.

The BGSU student chapter of ACM is celebrating its end of the school year with another picnic at the BG city park.

ACM will be providing tons of free food and games to play. We will be serving pulled pork, hamburgers, salad, vegetables, fruit, chips, dessert, pop, water and other tasty goods.

It's a lot of fun and everyone is encouraged to stop by, bring their friends and say hi!

BGSU Student chapter of ACM presents Dolly Kelly (Testing Manager) and Mike Keith (Software Test Engineer) of Progressive.

They will be giving a presentation about Progressive, some of their innovations and differences between STE and QAA roles.

Get your laptops, you will be loading and playing a game. Highest scoring team will receive Netduinos.

Jim Youll, an alumni of BG Computer Science working at Twitter in Silicon Valley is in town and wants to talk with current undergrad and graduate students Thursday Oct 2nd!

From 2pm - 4pm Jim will be hanging out in the conference room upstairs in Hayes hall.

As a CS Advisory board member and graduate of the program, Jim would like to hear about the current program from current students' POV. He's also interested to hear students people's post-graduation plans and how their experience at BGSU has influenced that thinking.

Jim is also happy to answer questions about his experience in tech and starting companies, internships, MIT, Silicon Valley, or Twitter.

BGSU Student chapter of ACM presents four recent BG graduates from Centric. They will be giving presentation on Centric, Agile for Non- Agile users and “Three Amigos". It's based on the interactions that Business Analysts (BA), Developers, and Testers (QAA or QAM) have amongst each other to build a project.

Marathon Petroleum is holding an information session for BGSU Computer Science, Management Information Systems and Information Systems Audit and Control majors.

They will talk about internships, co-ops and full time positions.

BGSU ACM presents a web design & development workshop.

Bootstrap is one of the most popular HTML, CSS, and JS frameworks for developing responsive projects in the industry. If you have a basic understanding of HTML/CSS, we can help you take your skills to the next level! Your resume will thank us!

You do not have to be a BGSU Computer Science major to join in the learning, and the class is FREE! (Got your attention now?)

We will be going over how to create your site in a basic grid system that is fully responsive, as well as Bootstrap components like tables, forms, buttons, and more. As always, food and drinks will be provided!

Owens Corning is excited to invite all BGSU Computer Science and Management Information Systems undergraduates and Applied Statistics and Operations Research graduate students to visit the Owens Corning World Headquarters in downtown Toledo.

Through hands on experience and valuable networking opportunities, students will be able to learn about Owens Corning and the many career opportunities that the IT field has to offer.

The event will be held on Friday, January 30, 2015. Students should arrive at headquarters between 9:00 am and 9:30 am. The day’s events kicking off at 9:30 am, and the day will end at 2:00 pm. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Break out sessions:

• Digital: Fast & Furious & Mobile. How Agile methods like story writing can deliver web and mobile applications in days or weeks instead of months or years.
• Security: The Best Offense is a Good Defense. See real time attacks on OC's systems and some of the tools used to keep the bad guys out.
• Analytics: Becoming a Data Detective. How we use data and advanced analytics to uncover trends in our sales and operations.
• ERP: Taming the Beast. See why SAP is such a big deal and what makes us so good at deploying it.

BGSU students will have a small group meeting with ten different employers who are coming here to hire CS students.

This is the best chance for students to talk with the employers before they get an internship or a full-time position.

Even if a student has one internship/job set up, it is always good to know what others are offering (as Computer Science is the most dynamically-changing field).

The BGSU Student ACM chapter presents a talk by Kevin Wohlever: " IT Survival stories during the SuperComputer Era: the beginning of big data".

The Ohio Technology Consortium or OH-TECH, is a division of the Ohio Board of Regents. The Shared Infrastructure group provides IT Services, software development and networking support for consortia members, which include: The Ohio Board of Regents, Ohio Supercomputer Center, OARnet, OhioLINK, the Ohio Tuition Trust Authority, and eStudent Services.

Kevin has been involved in High Performance Computing or Supercomputing for over 25 years. He was around at founding of the Ohio Supercomputer Center in 1987 as well working at supercomputer centers for Cray Research, NASA, the US EPA, and Dow Chemical

Kevin’s career has overlapped a large part of the supercomputing move from expensive, proprietary systems only available to government agencies, to relatively inexpensive, with open operating system environments that are available to a wide range of users. Along the way, Kevin has worked for and with: The National Security Agency, NASA, the US EPA, the FBI, Department of Homeland Security, the US Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Agency, Dow Chemical, Nationwide Insurance, Cray Research, OSC and OH-TECH. During that time he has moved from a system administrator up through the ranks as a project leader to his current position as the director of Shared Infrastructure.

A native of Lorain, Ohio, Kevin is a graduate of Bowling Green State University.

Jim Youll is a BGSU CS grad and Staff Engineer with the Site Reliability team at Twitter, based in San Francisco.

He be in town for a CS Advisory Board meeting on Friday, and has set aside some time to chat with students the day before.

We can cover thoughts about the CS program, careers/ambitions, tech jobs and Silicon Valley from anyone's POV, startups, or any other relevant topics.

This will be an open conversation around a big table - come and go as your schedule allows.

On Wednesday the 8th, BGSU ACM will host a Google engineer, Amin Ahmad, here to tell us about Google’s mission and what it is like to work for one of the worlds largest and most innovative corporations. He will also highlight some current research projects Google is working on that have the potential to dramatically change our world for the better!

Please join us at 7:30 to hear all about Google and the exciting things that Amin has prepared for us! As always there will be food and drinks provided.

BGSU Women in Computing is holding an event Monday night.

Two former BG students who now work at Owens Corning will be coming in to talk about their jobs and how they decided on their career paths.

This event is open to everyone. It will be Monday the 20th at 6:30 in Olscamp 119.

The BGSU Student ACM chapter presents a talk by David Michels from Leading Edje: "Wearable Tech in the Workplace".

Wearable technologies are no longer a thing of the future. They offer real-world value and many organizations are looking to solve their critical business problems utilizing these technologies.

We will be discussing the technology at the core of many of these devices Bluetooth Low Energy - how it works and how you can use it.

We will also review two client based proof of concepts which have been implemented using wearable tech.

The functionality and technology to be reviewed is: 1. Using Google Glasses to reduce human error and provide real-time system updates in a warehouse environment. 2. Using Bluetooth Low Energy devices to login to industrial equipment. This system gives an extra layer of physical security ensuring the right person is accessing the equipment.

It’s been a long semester, and it’s finally coming to a close. Come out and celebrate with your peers and faculty! The BGSU Student ACM spring picnic is taking place on the 26th from 1-4pm.

Experts from Owens Corning continue their education of Ruby on Rails with the BGSU student chapter of the ACM.

Lean, agile, and startup processes emphasis creating customer value and satisfying user needs, both expressed an unexpressed. How do you get valid customer and user insights to guide decision making?

On April 12th, Darren Kall, a user experience design and strategy expert based in Dayton, will show us the value of direct contact with real users.

• Learn the personal and corporate value of direct contact with real users
• Recognize opportunities to connect with users and learn how to engage with them
• Become empowered to put these techniques into practice and be confident you can do them well
• Get resources about where to learn more so you can continue to get insights from users

These user experience techniques work for all varieties of products and services. You can apply them if your users are consumers, employees (for enterprise applications), residents (for government services), patrons (for a library), donors (for non-profits), and for many other audiences. It does not matter if the product or service is a website, mobile app, complex enterprise dashboard, or museum exhibit.

This talk will be useful for all members of a product team, not just for user experience specialists. Software developers, visual designers, project managers, business analysts, marketing leads and other members of IT/product teams are encouraged to attend. The whole team should be empowered with these techniques and have the opportunity to learn as much as they can about users. The better the team’s insights are about users, the more successful the product will be.

BGSU Student chapter of ACM presents a Tech talk by AMAZON. Yes you heard that right, AMAZON will be here on campus on October 25th talking about their architectures for processing big data using Amazon Web Services. Web services are becoming an integral part of modern computing.

Abstract of the talk: Managing risks from present and future threats requires managing the frequency and impact of those events. US Government policy and many governance structures today focus on reducing frequency—sometimes hoping to achieve a frequency of zero. We will show how a far more sensible approach is to reduce the impact of threats carried out against targets, and why the stakes to achieve security are much greater than the amount of money required to maintain it.

We will also announce the results of our election that night and introduce the new cabinet members for 2017-18.
