How do we build a more inclusive web? It all starts with awareness. Join the Owens Corning Digital Team for an afternoon of insight and education on web accessibility, as part of Global Accessibility Awareness Day.

Toledo-area businesses, universities, and advocacy groups will cast a vision for how web accessibility impacts and shapes our community.

This half-day event will combine personal stories, hands-on demonstrations, and practical takeaways in order to spark discussion on how each of us can contribute to making Toledo “the most disability-friendly community in the United States.”

• An overview of what’s happening in the Toledo community regarding accessibility
• An introduction to what web accessibility is and how everyone is impacted by web accessibility
• An explanation of what does / does not make a website accessible
• Hands-on breakout sessions that deep-dive into certain aspects of web accessibility and provide practical demonstrations on how to test for web accessibility and make improvements
• Community discussion on hurdles to web accessibility and vision-casting for the future
• Practical take-aways for getting started with web accessibility

Vex-a-what? The How & Why: Designing City Flags...Alex Martinez is on a mission to make city flags better, especially in Toledo. Flags are ubiquitous symbols of civic pride and are often designed, frankly, pretty terribly. But they don't have to be.

Alex is a web designer and front-end developer at Whitelabel, a Toledo digital agency. After living in Washington, DC for several years, where its city flag is a sign of local pride, Alex returned to his hometown of Toledo with a dream to help get its own flag a redesign.

His talk will reveal the five basic principles of vexillology – the study of flags – and share the power they have to unify a city’s brand and community.

We're very excited to host guest speaker, Rita DeRaedt this March. She is offering insight into what it’s really like to work at Google (a.k.a. "the Googz"). Rita will delve into what it means to design for a truly massive audience.

Rita DeRaedt is a User Experience designer with a freelance and agency background. Having spent her Summer interning at Google, Rita has gone on to teach kids how to design and code on a BBC television series, Technobabble.

This is a Toledo Geek Dinner meeting with presentations from member Web Pros. This could be a technique or something you want to share if you can do so smartly. The restaurant is providing a special menu with a range of affordable meal items from $8 - $14.

Speakers: Each speaker is given 10 to 15 minutes to share your topics. We'll provide power, LCD projector with VGA connector & screen. I have a newer Mac adapter. Please be prepared with an adapter if you need it or go without.

I am excited to announce and welcome our September speaker, Jeff Cogswell. Jeff is a software developer and trainer, and owner of Cogsmedia Training. He has 25 years of experience in software development, having focused the last 10 years almost exclusively on web development. About eight years ago he realized JavaScript was soon going to be required knowledge of any web developer, and began mastering it. He has written over a dozen books, including C++ All-in-One for Dummies.

I've asked him to help us understand how he uses JavaScript plus what excites him about new JavaScript technologies.

We'll live code a mobile and web app that shares a theme and resources, as well as adjusts its layout according to screen size.

If enough people RSVP, we'll get pizza and refreshments for attendees.

At the most Toledo Web Professionals recent meetup, Amy Clark from Read for Literacy asked for volunteers to help with her group's website. This meeting will be for anyone who is interested in helping. This is for a good cause and I think everyone can agree that literacy is a good thing so come out and help if you can.

Week 1 of "Web and Coding 2-Week Bootcamp for Beginners".

A 2 week boot camp prep for beginners to introduce you to the basics and get you started on your journey. With 45 hours of material, you'll learn everything from how the web works to basic HTML, CSS, basic JavaScript, mockup tools, basic UX/UI, API's and CMS's.

AIGA Toledo presents "What Comes Next is the Future," a documentary film about the web created by Bearded founder Matt Griffin. It is the story of Tim Berners-Lee’s creation – how it came to be, where it’s been, and where it’s going – as told by the people who build it.

In the film, Griffin knits together a narrative by mining dozens of conversations with important figures from throughout the web’s history including Jeffrey Zeldman, Denise Jacobs, Tim Berners-Lee, Ethan Marcotte, Chris Wilson, Lyza Danger Gardner, Eric Meyer, Irene Au, Alex Russell, Trent Walton, Val Head, Jonathan Snook and many more.

In September, the WordPress Toledo meetup group is helping Horizon Youth Theatre's WordPress website. They have a nice website but it needs a performance pick up. Come help us help this Toledo non profit.

Performance is not limited to running on a fast server. We'll use evaluation tools like GTMetrix and PageSpeed Insights, then work from baselines demonstrating performance gains, step by step. Join us to learn how! Discuss how to get more speed, help SEO, and improve accessibility on WordPress websites.
