Code City - The Power of Re-Designing Toledo's Flag
Rustbelt Coffee

Vex-a-what? The How & Why: Designing City Flags...Alex Martinez is on a mission to make city flags better, especially in Toledo. Flags are ubiquitous symbols of civic pride and are often designed, frankly, pretty terribly. But they don't have to be.

Alex is a web designer and front-end developer at Whitelabel, a Toledo digital agency. After living in Washington, DC for several years, where its city flag is a sign of local pride, Alex returned to his hometown of Toledo with a dream to help get its own flag a redesign.

His talk will reveal the five basic principles of vexillology – the study of flags – and share the power they have to unify a city’s brand and community.

About eight years ago he realized JavaScript was soon going to be required knowledge of any web developer, and began mastering it. Road Trip to Refresh Detroit
Panera Bread Franklin Park Mall

Refresh Detroit is hosting “From Documents to Apps: Evolving an Open Web” on April 19th, starting at 6:15pm, in downtown Detroit (M@dison building).

Molly Holzschlag will discuss the entire state of Web development/design and show the Open Web Technology Stack visually from back end to front end.

Details: http://refreshdetroit.org/event/evolving-an-open-web/

We can also get a tour of the M@dison Building before: http://bedrockmgt.com/madison.html

Plan (so far): 3pm: Meet at Panera on Talmadge. You can grab a late lunch/early dinner and work as needed. 3:45pm: Leave for Detroit. Carpool / drive separately as needed. Tigers home game, so parking will be a challenge (and more expensive). 5pm: Tour of M@dison Building. Hang around the M@dison or get something to eat nearby. 6:15pm: Refresh Detroit session with Molly Holzschlag in the M@dison Building. YOU MUST REGISTER at RefreshDetroit.org - limited seating. 8:30pm: Session over. Some can leave to return to Toledo, others can stay in Detroit for food, drinks, etc.

People do not have to take part in the whole schedule! You can just show up at 3:45pm to leave for Detroit together. You can be at the M@dison at 5pm for the tour. Or just show up for the talk at 6:15pm.

To help us keep track of who from the Toledo region is interested in the road trip, please add yourself to this spreadsheet and which parts you are participating in: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AguCHuXypUWUdE9PRS1PTEljUk5jbzlLRXFWUXJfaFE

For those who prefer morning activities instead / in addition to evening ones, there is also a "Rise + Design" get-together with Molly at 9am on the 19th. See http://plancast.com/p/auc4/rise-design-molly-e-holzschlag for more info.
