StartUp Toledo October - Marty Porter
Toledo School for the Arts

We’re changing the scenery this month. Join us as we journey down the street from our usual stomping grounds to visit Marty Porter, Director of Toledo School for the Arts (and the baddest trumpet player around) — on his home turf.

Marty Porter is a man of many hats: Artist, Performer, Educator, and All Around Awesome Guy. Most importantly (and relevant), he's the founding Director of Toledo School for the Arts.

After a degree in musical education, and a masters in performance, Marty rocked his position as Director of Public Events for the BGSU College of Musical Arts, and Executive Director of the Lima Area Arts Council. He later founded our beloved arts school.

Join us in the TSA Gallery as we discuss the balance between administration, education, and navigating an ever-changing world of funding — all while making our children believe in themselves and the power of art to shape the world they live in.

Tours of the school's expanded facilities will be provided.

A cash bar from Manhattan's Restaurant (bring your greenbacks) and delicious food from Fowl and Fodder (bring your appetite) will be here as well.

Startup Toledo: Claire Coder
Manhattan's Restaurant

Claire Coder began her marketing company, There's a Badge for That, at age 16. In just one year she has grown the company to sell internationally with four independent distributors working by her side. Originally designing only buttons, the company now has over 400 original designs — and presses buttons, magnets, compact mirrors, and bottle openers.

As a senior at Southview High School, Coder is passionate about her extracurricular activities, grades, and helping others. As a World Champion Prosecution Attorney for her Mock Trial Team, Youth Intern at Epworth Church, and Certified Zumba Instructor, Coder is a busy young woman, yet always takes time to sip her favorite teas.

She will be majoring in marketing at the Ohio State University.

Join us at our home of homes, Manhattan's Restaurant for a drink, a high five, and (as always) a great conversation!

Toledo's Golden Age of Innovation

Every city has its claim to fame, its most famous export, its captains of industry. Toledo is no exception: Jeep, Packo's, Mud Hens, glass, Libbey, Owens, inspiration for an ABBA song... What?!

Join StartUp Toledo this month as patent attorney and history buff J. Matthew Buchanan shares stories from Toledo's Golden Age of Innovation. Matt will show how Toledo has given birth to not only beloved products still popular today, but entire industries. He'll connect the dots between rollercoasters, floor sanders, milk cartons, and an ABBA tune. Yes, really.
