We will meet on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at Hanson, Inc. The meeting is on the second floor.

We will have two speakers for this meeting. In the first half, Ben Roberts, PMP, will discuss the highlights of the revised PMI Continuing Certification Requirements System (CCR). In the second half, Keith Instone will discuss "Project Management and User Experience."

The Western Lake Erie Chapter of the Project Management Institute (PMI®) is the organization of choice for project management professionalism.

The Western Lake Erie Chapter was formed to serve the networking and education needs of Western Lake Erie area residents. With monthly meetings, professional development offerings and periodic certification review courses, the Western Lake Erie chapter strives to promote the profession of Project Management by and for its members, provide opportunities for project management education and professional development of its members, and provide a framework for professional networking and social interaction among its members.

The previous quote encapsulates well the mantra of the Improvement and Coaching Kata described by Mike Rother in his book Toyota Kata.

On Tuesday, we will be engaging in a fast paced exercise to better understand the iterative process of improvement, and the supporting management techniques. While the PMI strives for absolutes and definitive project plans, there are often times when the solution is not known. Tuesday will give attendees a chance to practice a scientific method of problem solving, moving projects forward when the path is not as clear.

The Western Lake Erie Chapter of the Project Management Institute (PMI®) is the organization of choice for project management professionalism.

Presenter: Debbie Matthews is a successful project manager with experience working for Fortune 500 companies, the United States Air Force, Department of Defense and small consulting firms. Debbie served for seven years on the board of the Project Management Institute (PMI) Western Lake Erie Chapter (WLEC) in the roles of VP of Finance, President Elect, President and Past President. She became Project Management Professional (PMP) certified in 2005, and Ford Agile Practitioner certified in 2014. Her project experience includes the IT portion of mergers, acquisitions and divestitures, IT infrastructure, application development, shop floor automation, real estate renovation, space surveillance and most recently mobile app development.

Topic: In 2015, Debbie had the opportunity to work with an Agile Coach to slow walk a project from the traditional waterfall process (Requirements, Design, Development, Test and Deploy on a large scale over a long time) to an Agile process (short sprints or iterations and frequent releases of small pieces of scope). Earlier this year, she had the opportunity to be tasked with building an extreme Agile project team within the digital Marketing space at Ford Motor Company. In October 2016, Debbie was sought out to combine her experience from those two activities to take a large in-flight global mobile app program and transition it to Agile without slowing the team down. This has been a fast paced, exciting effort that is still a work in progress. Debbie will share a high level description of her three experiences, discussing areas such as the process, management, the team, external partners and tools. After sharing her opportunities, challenges and pitfalls, she will encourage an open dialogue to allow others to share experiences and challenges. This will be a casual, fun and interactive evening.

Lean, agile, and startup processes emphasis creating customer value and satisfying user needs, both expressed an unexpressed. How do you get valid customer and user insights to guide decision making?

On April 12th, Darren Kall, a user experience design and strategy expert based in Dayton, will show us the value of direct contact with real users.

• Learn the personal and corporate value of direct contact with real users
• Recognize opportunities to connect with users and learn how to engage with them
• Become empowered to put these techniques into practice and be confident you can do them well
• Get resources about where to learn more so you can continue to get insights from users

These user experience techniques work for all varieties of products and services. You can apply them if your users are consumers, employees (for enterprise applications), residents (for government services), patrons (for a library), donors (for non-profits), and for many other audiences. It does not matter if the product or service is a website, mobile app, complex enterprise dashboard, or museum exhibit.

This talk will be useful for all members of a product team, not just for user experience specialists. Software developers, visual designers, project managers, business analysts, marketing leads and other members of IT/product teams are encouraged to attend. The whole team should be empowered with these techniques and have the opportunity to learn as much as they can about users. The better the team’s insights are about users, the more successful the product will be.

This event is a being organized BGSU ACM & Tech Toledo. Attending groups include Toledo Web Professionals & PMI WLEC.

Different types of projects require different types of thinking … and they are all okay. This presentation will discuss how P6 can support either project or political decision making.

THE S.A.L.T. PROCESS OF EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION will enhance the speaking, asking, listening, and thinking skills of each individual by promoting the positives and eliminating the negatives in their lives. Participants will learn 5 new Happy Exercises, 21 Wonderful Words of Great Communication, the triggers within us that cause problems in communication, awesome conflict resolution techniques, and how to manage and eliminate negative thoughts, emotions, and stress from our lives and the lives of others.

PMI WLEC Monthly Meeting - June 2016.

Loretta Dwight is a business analyst. In 1980, she received her BS from South Carolina State College in Mathematics and Computer Science. She worked at Owens Corning and Maritz Research accumulating over 20 years of experience in Information Technology. She has great analytical, collaboration and design skills. In December, 2015 she completed her MA program and received her degree in April 2016 in Management and Leadership from Liberty University. Recently, she spent a short period contracting as a Business Analyst where she utilized agile scrum principles. She is transitioning into educating young students matriculating into their next academic level on the importance of Effective Leadership. Her passion is to become an Entrepreneur developing effective leaders.

PRESENTATION: Angie's presentation on "Disability Awareness" provides a unique perspective on some of the daily issues facing people with disabilities. Angie will highlight ways The Ability Center can educate and assist individuals with and without disabilities.

Speaker Bio: Angie Goodnight is the Information and Community Outreach Coordinator for The Ability Center and has been at the center for 10 years. Prior to working at the Center, Angie owned and operated Angie's Angels, a home health care agency. Having acquired her disability later in life, (she lost her sight in her early thirties) Angie shares her perspective about living and working with a disability in the community.

PRESENTATION TOPIC: Problem Management and a different way to look at risks

SPEAKER: Adam Jackson is the IT problem manager for Owens-Illinois, Inc. (O-I)

PRESENTATION SUMMARY: Problems, like risks, are opportunities in work clothes. Defining, understanding, and working through them effectively enables you to provide higher qualities of service to your customers. Whether protecting from or exploiting them, problems and risks can be used to your advantages. Learn how O-I is using problem management to better their IT department, and to build and strengthen relationships while doing so.

SPEAKER BIO: Adam Jackson is the IT problem manager for Owens-Illinois, Inc (O-I). Prior to that, he led projects and initiatives that were transformational to the how their department worked. He began working at O-I in 2009 and is PMP certified. Adam graduated from California State University, Chico. In his spare time, he volunteers for local, community organizations.

PRESENTATION TOPIC: “Documenting and Learning from Project Decisions – A Tragedy in Three Acts”

DESCRIPTION OF SESSION:

Most PMOs have processes on tracking issues, mitigating risks and documenting decisions. This is good! However, few PMOs use that data to identify patterns and proactively turn that data into information, the information into knowledge, and the knowledge into wisdom. That is tragic. This presentation will explore a model to assist PMOs in extending their value to the organization to use knowledge learned from implementing projects into wisdom to help improve every new business project. Improvement in all phases, ideation, benefits definition, cost estimating, and time to implement. This will be achieved by capturing and tagging data in a Circumstance/Action/Result model.

Learning Objectives

1) The participant will understand the value of tagging critical decision points during the project lifecycle so Pareto analysis can be completed to identify patterns. Are 80% of the issues due to requirement gaps? How long is it taking to get a critical decision made? What type of test cases require the most retesting?

2) The PMO manager will learn how to improve the overall project/program delivering cycle by providing data that identifies historical project problem areas. The planning process or charter approval process can then be enhanced to address these items earlier in the process and perhaps avoid them in the actual project execution. This involves not only gathering the data, but presenting the data to key stakeholders.

3) The project manager will be better able to understand the value they bring to the overall organization by having well-structured information that can drive improved decision making. By having good circumstance definitions – other stakeholders can learn from them and be proactive in new projects to avoid duplicate omissions.

TOPIC: Explosive Project Results Using High-Performance Flow

Presentation: Ted Kallman uses an interactive game to demonstrate how simple practices and methods increase productivity right now. Ted’s proprietary system, called Flow, has been used to organize PMOs and entire organizations in Europe, Asia and the USA. When implemented well it causes performance increases of 300% to 400%. The practices and methods of Flow work in both Agile and Traditional environments.

PRESENTATION TOPIC: “Tailoring Agile – Reality and What the PMBOK Says”

SPEAKER: Mr. Dave Davis, PMP, PgMP, PBA & ACP Practitioner of project/program management and a recognized professional in the field of helping businesses implement change.

The PMBOK® Guide – Fifth Edition introduced the concept of “tailoring” to adjust your methodology to your business needs. The PMBOK® Guide – Sixth Edition and Agile Practice Guide were created to complement each other and address tailoring and Agile. The PMBOK focused on “predictive” practices while the Agile Practice guide on Agile practices and there was a common denominator! The PMBOK guide discusses tailoring your project to accommodate Agile Principles and the Agile Practice included a correlation between Agile and the PMI Knowledge Areas, an obvious acknowledgement that the two work together.

This presentation will explore what tailoring means and how to “tailor” a project to accommodate Agile and Predictive methodologies. Referencing real life experiences, PMO Methodology developers and interviews with Agile practitioners, you will understand the opportunities for integrating and tailoring a project. You will understand attainable early wins, existing techniques already in place, and how to bridge an agile culture and a predictive culture. Dave will share how the PMP and PBA tests address this relationship and how to incorporate it into your project methodology. He will also explore the Stacey Complexity Model and the relationship between requirement and technical complexity. Case studies of real-world tailoring (in multiple industries including healthcare, manufacturing, and financial services) will explore the technical shift in tailoring agile and the methodology/culture shift across organizations.

Essentials of Agile – Learn about the foundations of Agile, its 12 Principles and the essential tools of Agile. Also discussed is the appropriate use of Agile / Iterative vs. Traditional / Waterfall project management.

Essentials of Recovering Troubled Projects – Knowing what to look for and outlining the necessary steps to stop the hemorrhaging and get the project back onto the path to success.
