Nerd Summit Meet N Greet

We hope to be a beacon of light and hope for the continual growth and use of emerging technology in the Greater Toledo Area and beyond.

There are so many people who are doing amazing things or have great ideas and feel like they are the only ones around. We are for you!

We are a place to breed creativity, learn about new emerging technologies in areas such as web, mobile, data, & social media, we solve problems using our collective application of technology and outside the box thinking, and we facilitate the meeting of like minded people with skills you would find in California or New York right in Toledo!

Come check us out at a meet up, a learning session, or an event where we create something or help someone out!

April Nerd Summit
Service Spring Corporation

This month's Nerd Summit will be about two main things:

  • A talk from local start-up Twine LABS / Twine.it

Aaron Harwell & Jonathan Hawker will be talking about their journey of making an idea into a reality. Starting with their iPhone app Phototwine and beyond, they have practical experience in working with the local tech area and finding ways to continually push their ideas forward successfully. Be sure to stop by and check out one of their physical products (a new-age photo booth) that supports their apps.

Be sure to sign up for the one night stand of social networking!

  • PICK-A-PROJECT

We will also be giving a quick recap of our group, the value we see in doing local projects together, and hosting a brainstorming session to choose our first project and to build a core team to complete it! Be sure to check out our Trello Board to give your input and see the different available ideas.

One more thing...

We will have food & an interesting way to get to know everyone there! This should be fun!

Maker/Hackerspaces with BiG Fab Lab
Service Spring Corporation

Mark Bowlus and Mark Eberle from BiG Fab Lab will be presenting, and looking for feedback on, their concepts and preliminary plans for building and growing NorthWest Ohio makerspaces. We'd like to extend a special invitation to all those who have been involved in all makerspace attempts past and present to bring ideas and experiences.

All are welcome though as we'd like to get as much information as possible from any potential user of such a space!

For those unfamiliar, the basic concept is that it would be a facility offering access to shared equipment that an individual (or even business) may not be able to afford on their own. Everything from basic woodworking up through higher end 3-D printers and CNC machines.

The Patentability of Software
Service Spring Corporation

"The Patentability of Software" with Ray Meiers. The Patentability of Software after the Supreme Court’s June 2014 decision in Alice Corp. v. CLS Bank International.

By The Nerd Summit.

Abstract of the presentation:

On June 19, 2014, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down its decision in ALICE CORPORATION PTY. LTD, PETITIONER v. CLS BANK INTERNATIONAL ET AL. The case involved the patentability of a software-implemented invention. The Court determined that the invention did not qualify as patentable subject matter. However, the Court did not expressly hold that software is unpatentable per se. Thus, the decision has created tremendous uncertainty about the patentability of inventions dependent on software. Thousands of issued patents may now be invalid and numerous pending patent applications may face no pathway to allowance.

The presentation will briefly describe the history of software patenting, the specific facts of the ALICE case, and the aftermath of the decision thus far. Responses to the decision will then be offered and it is hoped that the presentation will then turn into a group dialogue about the hoped-for future of software patents.
