Meeting Notes

Topic: GNU/Linux (A brief history, command-line usage, filesystem layout, and which distribution to choose)

Topic notes: It's "back to school" season, and that means we're doing our Linux beginner topic once again. This time, it's a brief history of GNU/Linux, including a small section on using the command-line and the filesystem layout. Different distributions will also be mentioned to give new users an idea of which one to choose, based on their needs.

Services

TALUG provides free Linux and other free and open-source software distribution CDs free of charge. Please let us know in advance, and we can bring some media to the meeting for you. We also have a small library of books that guests and members may borrow. Books may be borrowed for a month at a time (until the next meeting) with a late fee of $1 per month for past-due books.

See you there!

Meeting Notes

This is the final topic in our "back to school" season. This time, we'll be answering the question new users to Linux have: What is "open source?"

We'll be discussing the pros and cons to open source and its similarities and differences to free and proprietary/closed source software. We'll also explain what exactly a software license is, and even mention a few popular ones.
