Toledo Area Linux Users Group - September 2012 Meeting
Toledo Sanger branch library

TALUG will be having its monthly meeting at the Toledo Sanger Branch Library in meeting room A on Saturday, September 29th, 2012 from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM.

There will be a small presentation on the Raspberry Pi (a small $35 computer running Linux.)

The library provides free wifi access and TALUG provides Linux and other free and open-source distribution CDs upon request.

TALUG: A Beginner's Guide to Linux

General Information

The Toledo Area Linux Users Group meets once a month to discuss and promote awareness and usage of GNU/Linux and other open-source software and hardware.

Meetings are (usually) held on the third Saturday of each month from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. We currently meet at the University of Toledo in Nitschke Hall, upstairs in room NI 2004.

Topic: GNU/Linux (A brief history, command-line usage, filesystem layout, and which distribution to choose)

Topic notes: It's "back to school" season, and that means we're doing our Linux beginner topic once again. This time, it's a brief history of GNU/Linux, including a small section on using the command-line and the filesystem layout. Different distributions will also be mentioned to give new users an idea of which one to choose, based on their needs.

Services

TALUG provides free Linux and other free and open-source software distribution CDs free of charge. Please let us know in advance, and we can bring some media to the meeting for you. We also have a small library of books that guests and members may borrow. Books may be borrowed for a month at a time (until the next meeting) with a late fee of $1 per month for past-due books.

We'll be discussing the pros and cons to open source and its similarities and differences to free and proprietary/closed source software. We'll also explain what exactly a software license is, and even mention a few popular ones.
