Cloud Computing - A Paradigm IT Changer

Cloud Computing is an emerging computing paradigm envisioned to change all IT landscape facets including technology, business and services. It is a consumer/delivery model that offers IT capabilities as services billed based on usage. Many such cloud services can be envisioned, but the main ones are IaaS (Infrastructure-as-a-Service), PaaS (Platform-as- a-Service), and SaaS (Software-as-a-Service). The underlying cloud architecture includes a pool of virtualized compute, storage and networking resources that can be aggregated and launched as platforms to run workloads and satisfy their Service-Level Agreement (SLA). Cloud architectures also include provisions to best guarantee service delivery for clients and at the same time optimize efficiency of resources of providers. Examples of provisions include, but not limited to, elasticity through scaling resources up/down to track workload behavior, extensive monitoring, failure mitigation, and energy optimizations. The two main technologies enabling clouds are: (i) Virtualization, the foundation of clouds; and (ii) manageability (autonomics), the command & control of clouds. This talk is intended to provide an overview of cloud computing, its enabling technologies and current challenges. It will also look at clouds’ IT/business ramifications as well as required future

IEEE Toledo members visited the MidWest MicroDevices facility on September 2012.

MidWest MicroDevices is a dedicated wafer foundry for Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), micro-sensors and specialized thin film devices. They provide MEMS and non-MEMS thin film fabrication processing for emerging to medium volume applications. Their facility includes Class 10, Class 100, and Class 1,000 production areas for precise standards of cleanliness and quality along with a full set of micro-fabrication tools.

MidWest MicroDevices equipment set and facility are designed to meet the needs of the modern MEMS customer, providing processing flexibility and capability. MidWest MicroDevices support their customer’s needs from concept and design, to initial prototype and volume production. Their clientele includes Fortune 100 companies in Biomedical, Aerospace, Defense, Transportation and Instrumentation industries.

IEEE Toledo Section has a tour and technical presentation scheduled at the University of Toledo Medical Center Simulation Center on Wednesday, October 10. A 20 minute tour of three labs is scheduled to begin at 5:30 PM with a presentation from 6:30-7:30. Reservation deadline: 5:00 PM on Friday, Oct. 5.

The new $36 million simulation center can teach numerous students how to prepare themselves for their future profession. The center is among the first health-science campuses in the nation to incorporate I-Space — a four-sided virtual immersive room with 3-D computer-aided design walls. This technology can create an unlimited number of virtual images allowing learners to travel through the heart of a human body or experience being inside a human blood cell.

The lab is located in the basement of Collier Building Room 0202. Presentation will be in Collier Building, Room 0335.

The IEEE Toledo Section will hold this year's Institute Night on Thursday, November 15, 2012, at The Holiday Inn Express in Perrysburg, Ohio starting at 6:00pm.

Dr. Jamali (Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Toledo), will give a presentation on bird monitoring systems for wind turbine applications.

The Toledo Section of IEEE presents a talk by Carl Selinger: "Stuff You Don't Learn in Engineering School" on Thursday, April 11th, 2013 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. The event will be hosted at the University of Toledo Engineering facilities in the newly renovated SSOE Seminar Room, Room 1027, in Nitschke Hall.

The 2013 Institute Night of the Toledo Section of IEEE will be held on Thursday, November 21, 2013 at the Holiday Inn Express, in Perrysburg. Social hour and cash bar will start at 6:00pm, with dinner commencing around 6:45pm. The cost to IEEE members and guests is $15.00, for student members it is $5.00 payable at the event.

This year's speaker, Dr. Robert Green, will be presenting "Reliability and the Smart Grid: Issues and Methods".

Please plan to attend a presentation on wind energy on Thursday, September 25 at 5:30 pm in the EECS Department Conference Room (Nitschke Room 2004) at the University of Toledo.

Our speaker will be Dr. Robert Green, Assistant Professor at Bowling Green State University. Dr. Green has served as Director of Wind and Solar Research at Wind Energy Corporation, and he was our Guest Speaker at the 2013 IEEE Institute Night where he spoke on Reliability and the Smart Grid.

Light refreshments will be served, and there is no charge for the program.

Please join IEEE Toledo for a 30 minutes tour of the Big Fab Lab makerspace in Bowling Green on February 11 2016 at 5:30 pm.

The Big Fab Lab is an open-access full service makerspace serving Northwest Ohio. They currently host meetups for enthusiasts in wireless networking, Drones, Arduino and Embedded computers, among others.

Mark Bowlus will be our host. Mark has a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, and specialization in Computer Science. He has worked in a number of engineering related positions with organizations such as: Honda, Westinghouse Robotics, and Materion.

There will be a free one hour presentation on Intellectual Property by the Buchanan and Nipper Legal Firm at 6:00 pm after the tour. There will also be an open house at 7:00pm till 9:00pm. You are invited to attend all of these events.

Smartphones, tablets, iPods, and PDAs continue to merge in form, fit, and functionality and now include data acquisition, data aggregation, storage, and communications capabilities.

This presentation provides insights into the features and capabilities of such systems, their possible uses in unethical/unlawful activities, and a discussion of the concepts of forensic analyses and approaches useful in combating such uses.

IEEE Distinguished Lecturer Dr. George Proeller will present on this topic at the SSOE Seminar Room(Nitschke Hall 1027), on April 11 2016, 11:00 am to 12:30 pm. Dr Proeller will have the opportunity to meet with students and other attendees after.

Cyberattacks on infrastructure control systems are getting more frequent and sophisticated since Stuxnet’s effect on Iran’s nuclear facilities in 2010.

More recent attacks such as Flame, Shamoon, Havex, Dragonfly and Black Energy are equally troubling. Many attacks have resulted in outages and physical damage of infrastructure.

In December 2015, a coordinated cyberattack on the Ukrainian power grid lead to an outage for 80,000 customers.

Extensive damage resulted from a cyberattack that prevented the proper shutdown of a blast furnace at a German steel mill.

IEEE Distinguished Lecturer Dr. George Proeller will present on "Securing Intelligent Control Systems". This lecture will be at the Electrical Industries Building (TECA Office), 727 Lime City Road, Rossford, on April 12 starting at 5:30 pm.

This event will be held at the Electrical Industries Building (TECA Office), 727 Lime City Road, Rossford. Dinner starts at 5:30 pm and the lecture starts at 7:00 pm. The cost for dinner is $25 for non-members, $20 for members, and $10 for students. You can attend the lecture only, which is free.

Small island states strive to continue economic growth, mitigate climate change and reduce their dependence on imported fossil fuels. They offer a geographical landscape which encourages distributed generation in order to provide power to end users that are located in remote areas. Often times, this distributed generation is accomplished through grid connected solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. Because they do not emit greenhouse gas, and they use the free light from the sun to generate electricity, solar PV systems provide renewable energy in a sustainable way. This presentation will discuss the challenges and opportunities associated with grid connected solar PV in island states. It will also propose potential waste management strategies of such solar PV systems from cradle to grave.

Social hour will begin 6:30 PM. Dinner will be served at 7:00 PM.

Our speaker is Dr. Douglas Oliver. Dr. Oliver received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Washington State University in 1985. He graduated cum laude from the University of Toledo's law school (2003). In 2004, he was award a "Best Paper Award" from the ASCE’s Journal of Professional Issues in Engineering Education and Practice – Legal Issues Division.

IEEE Southeast Michigan presents a conference on Internet of Things and Smart Living.

What do smart grids, virtual power plants and smart homes have in common? They are part of the Internet of Things (IoT). The IoT is the inter-networking of physical devices embedded with control systems, sensors, and actuators, that can collect and exchange data.

The IoT makes it possible to collect real-time power-related information from end-users and automate the management of distribution devices like transformers and reclosers. Efficiencies can therefore be gained within power production and distribution systems.

For the end-user, it is expected that IoT will be integrated into all forms of energy consuming devices (such as switches, power outlets, bulbs, televisions, etc.). Such IoT devices would offer the opportunity for off-site management and advanced scheduling.

IEEE Distinguished Visitor Fawzi Behmann is an expert on IoT.

The Toledo IEEE Section in conjunction with the Student Section and IEEE Women in Engineering are hosting an event, the highlight of which is a 1 PDH presentation on Autonomous Vehicles.

The presenter is Robert Neff, a corporate officer in the Intrass Corporation. Bob is member of the SAE Vehicle to Vehicle Communications Standards Technical Committee, and past Chairman of the SAE V2V Vehicle Safety Subcommittee. Bob is chair of IEEE South East Michigan Section. Robert will bring an autonomous vehicle to campus, subject to acquiring a campus permit.

There will be networking and discussing careers with students. This event will also include a tour of an energy and a cyber-security lab showcasing groundbreaking research that is being done at the University of Toledo.

This event will be from 5:30pm till 8:30pm at the Brady Center (1600 N. Westwood Ave.) at the University of Toledo, on Tuesday September 18. Free food and drinks will be provided.
