Intro to Responsive Design
Seed Coworking

What's the big deal about Responsive Design?

The big deal is that there are now one billion different devices on which people can view websites.

....OK, not really one billion, but a lot. Responsive design lets us use media queries to arrange content in a user-friendly manner for the best experience on whatever device a website is viewed on. If your boss or your client aren't already asking for their new or existing projects to be responsive, it might be up to you to educate them about it and offer it as an option.

This workshop will help you understand how responsive design is done, and give you the tools and resources to create a responsive website. Participants should have a basic understanding of HTML & CSS, enough to be comfortable editing it in a text editor and inspecting it in the browser.

Tech Toledo invites all information technology professionals to join us on December 11th for the 4th Annual GeekDinner HolidayMixer. This will be the year’s largest social gathering of the IT community in the Toledo Region. We have been averaging 50 people over the first 3 years.

It starts at 5:30pm on Thursday, December 11th, 2014. We are meeting at Packo’s at the Park, 7 South Superior Street, in downtown Toledo, in the Outfield room.

No RSVP is required. Show up hungry for Packo’s, money to pay for your own food and drink, and a desire to connect with colleagues.

Many members of regional IT groups will be in attendance, holding their annual end-of-year Geek Dinners with us. The groups include Toledo Web Professionals, Nerd Summit, NWOACM, ISACA, Girl Develop It Toledo, NWNUG, Toledo iOS Developers, and TALUG (and we expect more groups). You will be able to meet the leaders and members of the groups at the event.

You are NOT required to be a member of any of these groups to attend. We welcome anyone who wants to hang out with us, such as entrepreneurs, designers, business leaders, engineers, government officials and marketing professionals.

The StartUp Toledo holiday party is the same evening (at the Art Museum). The TechToledo mixer is where you can geek out with other IT folks, while StartUp Toledo will help you connect with entrepreneurs and others involved in tech startups in the region. For those who want to attend both, we will remind you when to leave the mixer and drive to the Art Museum.

Intro to Git and Version Control
Seed Coworking

It's time for a lesson in version control! Maybe you write code. Maybe you don't write code, but you work with people who do. Maybe your work has nothing to do with computers and you only dabble in websites in your spare time, but you really wish you could remember how that code worked 2 weeks ago. Maybe you're writing a book and want to keep a versioned backup of that document to look back on later.

For all of these things, git can help. We'll cover the following and more:

  • What is git?
  • What is the concept behind git?
  • Common uses
  • Creating a git repository
  • Adding/removing files to and from git
  • Tracking file changes
  • Branching, merging, and even resolving file conflicts
  • Sharing your repository with others
  • Using a repository shared by others
  • Github basics

Magnus Stahre is a software engineer at Tweddle Group, avid supporter of Girl Develop It, and master of all things Git.

Intermediate JavaScript [2-Day Workshop]
Seed Coworking

Session #1: Tuesday, September 22nd @ 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Session #2: Thursday, September 24th @ 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Whether it's jQuery, AngularJS, MomentJS, or Backbone, you may have already heard of a few JavaScript libraries or frameworks. There are tons of them out there and now that you have a solid understanding of programming and JavaScript fundamentals, it’s time to get down and dirty with some true DOM manipulation. Use those loops, objects, conditional statements and more to turn your web pages into web applications. In this four hour course, we'll dive deep into a few JavaScript libraries - including jQuery - and build a true web-based application with dynamic, interactive content.

Get excited to: 1. Use all those great HTML and CSS skills you've learned at an intermediate-level. 2. Bust out those basic JavaScript and programming skills. 3. Be able to define some buzzwords: things like library, framework, singe-page-app, MVC, modular, etc. 4. Learn how to research, implement, and use a JavaScript library in your webpage. 5. Find out which libraries/frameworks the cool kids are using these days. 6. Manipulate the DOM with the JavaScript library, jQuery. 7. Spend most of our time building an interactive form that submits data to your email.

Intermediate WordPress: Building a (Child) Theme
Seed Coworking

With 20% of the web running on WordPress, it's no surprise that we're WordPress fans!

We're happy to offer our first ever Intermediate WordPress class! In this class we'll get deeper into WordPress site customization by creating our first child themes together. We'll use lots of CSS and a little PHP to create custom post types and style our themes. You'll leave with an understanding of how to get your WordPress site customized precisely to your liking!

Note: This class is for students with previous WordPress experience. You will get more from this workshop if you have your own hosting and FTP access, and a WordPress site that you can work on during class.
