Join us on February 15th at 6 pm for the first information session about ErieHack Toledo.

ErieHack Water Data and Engineering Hackathon is a tech-driven water innovation competition and accelerator program that will bring together coders, developers, engineers, data experts, water professionals and every day concerned citizens to generate creative solutions to Lake Erie's biggest challenges.

The ErieHack competition runs from February to May, with regional competitions happening in Detroit, Toledo, Cleveland and Buffalo. The ErieHack Toledo coding days will take place from March 24th-26th and the best teams will move on to a semi-final in Detroit in April and the final summit in Cleveland in May. There's $100,000 in prizes up for grabs!

This is the first information session happening in Toledo, with a second to take place on March 2nd. The purpose of the evening is to provide more information about the event as a whole, detail some of the key challenges we'll be hoping to "hack," and connecting with fellow participants. To that end, the first half of the event will be focused on providing information, while the second half will be devoted to general socializing.

During the Toledo Hack-A-Thon participants will form teams of up to five people to tackle the competition challenges. The teams will then have 48 hours to develop their project as much as possible and present their work on Sunday the 26th. The best teams as determined by a panel of judges will move on to a semi-final in Detroit in April and the final summit in Cleveland in May. There's $100,000 in prizes up for grabs!

The event will kick off on Friday the 24th at 6 pm with speakers talking about major challenges with Lake Erie and then a presentation of project ideas people have and the formation of teams. Work will continue through the weekend until early evening on Sunday. The facility will be open and accessible for all 48 hours, although participants will not be required to stay the whole time. All food and drink will be provided by the organizing team. Parking is free.

You are welcome to find some friends or colleagues to create a team or just come to the opening evening and find a project to hook up with. Hack-a-thons are a fun, exciting atmosphere that facilitates not only the growth of a project idea but also of the participants. It's a great place to develop new skills and meet new people.

Come check out the Erie Hack Semi-finalists before they present at Erie Hack Detroit! Presenters will take the stage for 10 minutes each, 5 minutes to demo and 5 minutes to answer questions, followed by open announcements and community networking. Aquasci - a gamified citizen science app Open Erie - an effort to synthesize key Lake Erie data and improve key data accessibility for various target markets .

ACOsystem - a machine that proposes to harvest algae and process it for fuel.

Erie Hack is an innovation challenge that accelerates technology solutions to Lake Erie’s most pressing problems. During several months in 2019, Erie Hack will empower researchers, designers, engineers, developers and creatives around the region to build teams, develop innovations, and compete for more than $100,000 in prizes.

Alex Lim - Alex Lim is a Biological Engineer working with Resonance Group, Ltd. and a co-founder of the non-profit organization, Midstory. He is collaborating with a group of researchers to develop aquatic nutrient monitoring and remediation systems to tackle the issues of algal blooms. He grew up in Kalamazoo, MI and received a B.S. in Biological Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Alex’s experiences include work with various groups including the MIT Media Lab's OpenAg Initiative, labs in the Koch Institute of Integrated Cancer Research, and the MIT Synthetic Biology Center. Currently, Alex is leading a pilot project involving constructed floating wetlands and sensor technology for real-time data analysis as a platform for future large-scale development.

We will be enjoying drinks, snacks, and good company at LaunchPad Incubation along with parallel celebrations in Buffalo, Cleveland, Erie PA, and Detroit as the next iteration of our regional competition kicks off.

Erie Hack is a $100,000 data and engineering competition designed to generate innovative technology solutions for Lake Erie Basin’s most pressing problems. This program leverages the expertise of researchers, designers, engineers, developers and creatives across the region to activate, cultivate and accelerate these hacks. In its first iteration, the program generated over 40 innovative solutions to water challenges, engaged over 100 partner organizations and attracted coverage from over 150 press outlets globally as it put over 200 of region’s best minds to work for our most precious resource. Now we are working with communities across the region to put our Great Lake back on the map in 2019.
