DevOps Days Detroit Conference
through
Wayne State University - McGregor Memorial Conference Center

When I started this user group about three years ago, we had three people attend the first meeting. We're now up to over 300 members! Along the way--in addition to the sharing of ideas--a lot of great connections have been made. Earlier this year a small group of AWS Michigan members got together and decided to do something even bigger. We wanted to get more people talking more about the cloud, DevOps, and how the emerging future of IT is transforming both the industry and the job market in the Midwest.

While I briefly introduced it at last month's meeting, I'd like to formally invite all AWS Michigan members to join us at the DevOps Days Detroit conference on November 11-12 at Wayne State University. The two-day conference will include speakers from both the local area and around the country. It is entirely grassroots, non-profit event that is organized by techies for techies. There will also be prizes, t-shirts, food, and a spiffy afterhours party!

For more information, to register, or to submit a talk yourself, please visit the DevOps Days Detroit event page. The "early bird" price is currently $99.00 but you can save $10 with the coupon code "AWSMICH."

Thanks! (BTW, there will not be a November AWS Michigan meeting so I hope to see you all in Detroit!)

Global Accessibility Awareness Day, Detroit
Grand Circus (Detroit)

Back for the third year, Global Accessibility Awareness Day Detroit is a day for web professionals to gather together to learn about accessibility and how to make the web more accessible and usable by everyone. Events will be held around the world to raise awareness about web accessibility.

EXPERIENCE THE WEB FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF A SCREEN READER USER

You work hard on your web content, the goal being for that content to reach as wide an audience as possible. To that end, you study all the accessibility-related guidelines and do your best to apply them to your work.

But what does it all really mean? How does someone who uses a screen reader experience your site? How will the next change you're planning to make impact that experience?

In this hands-on session with Al Puzzuoli, you will learn to use a screen reader as a tool to answer the questions above.

• First, you'll learn the basics of controlling your computer and navigating the web, using only a screen reader and your keyboard.

• Next, you will see examples of accessible sites that play nice with screen readers, and other inaccessible ones, which decidedly do not.

• Finally, the fun begins, as it will be time to play! You will have the opportunity to go the the website of your choice, and use your newly honed skills to do some basic accessibility testing

Cost: $5.
