  • 7:00 - 8:30 Meeting

Topic: Date and time APIs are notoriously difficult, even though we all have an intimate understanding of the problem domain. Why is it so hard to get right in an app, yet so easy to reason about? How could Apple screw up alarms around Daylight Savings Time more than once? In this talk, we’ll take a tour of the time and date APIs in Cocoa and Cocoa Touch, solve some common problems, and figure out why things aren’t always as easy as they seem to be.

Jonathan Buchanan Talks about iOS
Seed Coworking

Agenda:

  • 6:30 - 7:00 Pizza (sponsored by GroundSpeed™)
  • 7:00 - 8:30 Meeting

We are changing it up a bit this month by giving you two speakers with a shorter duration. This will be a great month, so don't miss out!

Speaker: Jonathan Buchanan Topic: Embedding Media

A self-described computer fanatic, Jonathan has developed mad skills in everything from php and MySQL to Ruby, Rails, Javascript and all points in between. He’s the world’s youngest developer to have an app in the App Store that he coded entirely on his own and he’s got several more in the pipeline. Jonathan is a big-thinker, too – after questioning why social sharing sites work as they do, he started developing Daystream, a social journaling ecosystem, with his dad and plans to launch it before he begins Middle School.

More TBD.

Skinny View Controllers with Chris Stephan
Seed Coworking

Toledo iOS Developers / CocoaHeads Agenda:

  • 6:30 - 7:00 Food (sponsored by GroundSpeed™)
  • 7:00 - 8:30 Introductions and Meeting

Topic: Are your view controller methods getting out of hand? With more logic getting crammed into a view controller every time you add a new feature? Are they getting longer than 10 lines? View controllers are usually the largest files in any iOS project. And the worst part is, they usually aren't very reusable. We will take a look at some of the tricks and techniques you can use to put your view controllers on a diet, reuse more code, and get all of that logic out of your controllers.

Speaker: Chris Stephan (@endozemedia) is a Rubyist by day for Squaremouth and Cocoa developer by night. He has worked on iOS applications for fortune 500 companies and started with the initial release of the iOS SDK.

Strategies for Learning React
Seed Coworking

GDG Toledo Welcomes Ryan Lanciaux!

React has been on your radar for some time but you don't know the best way to dive in to the ecosystem. There are so many awesome libraries but it's hard to distinguish between what's necessary and what's addressing a pain-point you don't yet have.

In this talk, we will consider some strategies for learning React and some of React's core principles. From there, we will discuss how taking a component-based view of our front-end can help us build an application architecture that scales over time. Finally, we'll examine some important libraries in the React ecosystem and what problems they are working to solve.

Test Driven iOS Development
Seed Coworking

All programming languages have a culture. Some of that culture comes from the type of language it is. Interpreted languages tend to have a different feel to them an compiled languages. Using a wide variety of languages gives you an opportunity to learn things from the various languages and apply concepts to other languages in uncommon ways. That's what this test is about. Day-to-day I spend most of my time writing Ruby where auto-mated testing isn't just popular, you're likely to get shunned if you don't do it. Objective-C's culture doesn't view automated testing in the same light, and because of that testing is not as common in the iOS/OS X development world. This also comes from the simple thought that "Testing is hard". This talk aims to get you over that thought, and to show you the strength of automated testing to help you right better code and to give you confidence as you change your code in the future.

Tony Hanson and Grub Hub
Seed Coworking

Agenda:

6:30 - 7:00 Pizza (sponsored by GroundSpeed™) 7:00 - 8:30 Meeting

This will be a great month, so don't miss out!

Speaker: Tony Hanson A recent graduate from The University of Toledo and an IT nerd at Libbey Glass, Tony has been working with computers since the age of 12. Tony considers himself a “rookie” in the field of computer programming and possesses knowledge in C++, C#, VB, objective C and the scripting language Windows Powershell. As a personal trainer and fitness junkie, Tony was looking for a way to empower people to take control of their personal fitness and weight loss goals without having to pay outrageous fees to hire a trainer and nutritionist. Thus the idea of Grub Coach was born, a native mobile iOS application that allows users to generate the information they need on their own.

Topic: Tony talks about the process of building Gub Hub By asking a few basic questions, Grub Coach uses scientifically researched calculations and algorithms to calculate the appropriate number of calories for weight gain/loss goals. It also calculates the appropriate amount of macronutrient intake depending on the body type of the user. If the user would like, they can see an itemized daily meal plan of how much to eat, as well as when to eat. Alongside this feature, Grub Coach also has: exercise routines for building muscle or losing fat, a BMI calculator, a list of healthy foods, tips on using the app to achieve goals, and new to version 1.1, a list of the 3 healthiest menu items at 30 of the top fast food and sit down restaurants.
