Digital Cultures in the Age of Big Data through
BGSU
Track the conference all week via Twitter: https://twitter.com/search/realtime?q=%23digici Although the sciences and quantitative social sciences have embraced new information technologies, the arts, humanities and qualitative social sciences have adapted and adopted them more unevenly and with varied enthusiasm. Digital Cultures in the Age of Big Data will help move BGSU humanities forward by fostering dynamic interactions among ideas, theories, and critical perspectives within the broad area of digital technologies. This weeklong, interdisciplinary institute is devoted to the digital humanities and all the opportunities they present. This will be a week in which participants from the arts, humanities and qualitative social sciences — whether novices or well versed in new technologies — can come together to educate ourselves and one another in a community-building environment that marks the beginning of a changing culture on campus. Areas of inquiry will include digital art and new media, electronic literature, digital scholarship and publishing, digital democracy, the Digital Divide and the politics of Big Data, the public humanities, and grant writing. The institute will feature a digital art exhibition plus lectures, workshops, and discussions with seven scholars of digital culture and keynote addresses by two foundational figures in the field: Dr. N. Katherine Hayles, Professor of English at Duke University; and Dr. Lev Manovich, Professor at the CUNY Graduate Center; director of the Software Studies Initiative at the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology, and a visiting professor at the European Graduate School. Digital Cultures in the Age of Big Data will be the ideal occasion to find opportunities for transdisciplinary work involving the arts, humanities and qualitative social sciences. This institute is free and open to the public. BGSU graduate students may also receive a certificate in Digital Cultures for participating. |

Irresistible: The Rise of Addictive Technology and the Business of Keeping Us Hooked –
BGSU Student Union
Community members are invited to hear Adam Alter speak at BGSU on October 8th. Adam is the author of “Irresistible: The Rise of Addictive Technology and the Business of Keeping Us Hooked” (which is this year’s common read at BGSU). Irresistible is a fascinating, engaging read that takes readers through numerous psychological and marketing experiments, illustrates relationships between physical and behavioral addictions, offers advice for all of us, opens the door for healthy debate—and much, much more. In this revolutionary book, Adam Alter tracks the rise of behavioral addiction, and explains why so many of today's products are irresistible. Though these miraculous products melt the miles that separate people across the globe, their extraordinary and sometimes damaging magnetism is no accident. The companies that design these products tweak them over time until they become almost impossible to resist. Learn more at https://www.bgsu.edu/commonread and be sure to select "Community member" when you register. FREE! Adam Alter’s presentation is scheduled from 7:30-9:15 PM and will include a Q&A from the audience and a book signing. Please note that the doors to the Ballroom will open at 7:10 PM. Parking for Community Members: Please note that you may park in Lot 7, which is next to the Student Union and which can be accessed from Thurstin St. If this lot becomes filled, you may park in Lots E or F, both of which also can be accessed from Thurstin. You may park in any of these three locations free of charge after 5:00 PM on Monday, as the parking rules for these lots have been “relaxed” for community member parking for this event. |

(Rescheduled from Jan 31st) The lack of diversity in design is not a new problem. Although scholars, employers, organizations, and design professionals have been investigating it for more than 50 years, the problem still exists. Representation of people of color in the design profession hasn’t significantly increased in over ten years, while culturally insensitive advertising and messaging are on the rise. What are the problems causing this disparity? Come listen as Jacinda Walker founder of designExplorr and author of Design Journeys: Strategies for Increasing Diversity in Design Disciplines explains the problems causing the lack of diversity in design, shares the need for more resources and outlines strategic solutions to close the diversity gap in design disciplines. |
