Pixels of Fury
Secor Building

Get ready for live design entertainment during the RockPaperSizzle Show!

Presented by Shutterstock, (AIGA's Official Sponsor for Creative Inspiration) Pixels of Fury is a traveling competition that pits designers against one another in a high-speed challenge, cheered on by a live audience and we are bringing the tour to Toledo this September! With the judges and crowd watching, the pressure is on to create the most compelling work before the clock runs out.

Competitors face off in 20-minute rounds at computer stations in a party setting, creating original posters with a common challenge. In each round, a winner is selected by votes from at least two judges and the audience (through SMS voting). In the final championship round, the winners of each of the competition rounds switch topics and re-design each others’ posters. The judges and audience vote for the grand champion.

All competitors use curated Shutterstock lightboxes and Shutterstock Instant and Spectrum search to create their posters. They can add type, but can’t use any outside images. Everything happens live, with competitors surrounded by the audience while their work is projected onscreen in real time.

More event information will roll out as we get closer, but Save the Date now!

AIGA Summer Show. Free Admission/Donations Welcome.

“The size, shape, smell, texture and sound of a vinyl record; how do you explain to that teenager who doesn't know that it's a more beautiful musical experience than a mouse click? You put the record in their hands. You make them drop the needle on the platter. Then they'll know.” - Jack White

With access to thousands of songs tucked away in our pockets, technology has made it easy for us to not just listen to our music, but devour it. We can set the mood to every waking moment (and sleeping moment for that matter). Our own personal soundtracks, closing us off to the rest of the world in beautiful auditory isolation. No matter the format, the experience of listening to music is vital to many of us. Even as technology continues to redefine that experience with promises of accessibility, speed and control, part of me longs for life to just slow down. Take the time, turn off the phone and illuminated screens and really listen to music. For decades, records have allowed us that unique opportunity. There’s a warmth to vinyl records, a delicate and often imperfect charm capable of releasing us from the compulsion to dart from track to track. We experience the music not as a collection of songs, but as a unified work of art.

And then there’s the record cover. It’s much easier to make an impression when you have so much real estate to work with. There’s more room for details and subtleties. When you hold it in your hands, it feels like art. Something collectible that you could hang on the wall, unlike the countless CD jewel cases you likely have stacked in a closet. We’ve all dreamed of designing album art for our favorite band or musician. Well now is your chance. Maybe it’s for one of your favorite albums that you were less than impressed with the artwork. Redesign it. Maybe you want to put a modern spin on a vintage classic or a retro spin on a new release. Do it. Give it your own interpretation. Make it beautiful, impactful, and memorable. Music and design have always gone hand in hand, so pay homage to the music that moves you to create.

We’re extremely excited for this show and know it will be a blast for all participants. It is a fundraising event, as all accepted artwork will be available to purchase via silent auction. There will also be a DJ, appetizers and a cash bar.

In addition, the show will be held in conjunction with Pixels of Fury: A Live Creative Inspiration Tournament presented by Shutterstock. Designers compete in front of a live audience to conceive and create inspiring posters at breakneck speed. Under the gaze of local superstar judges, the pressure is on to answer the big design challenge: Whose inspiration shines brightest?

Use #aigatoledo for your tweets, instragrams, etc. for this event.

Popcorn Posters
Secor Building

The smell of salty, buttery popcorn and the largest soda you’ve ever held in your hands (for just a quarter more) and a somewhat comfy seat in a dark room full of strangers – this is a night at the movies. There is something about seeing a film in the theater that has continued to draw us in. It’s not just a night at the movies; it’s the entire courtship that captures our attention – starting with iconic movie posters.

The art of posters to promote a theatrical event goes way back, gaining popularity with the designs of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec in the late 1800s. Within the last century, movie posters have been a symbol of the film industry. A movie poster is not only a form of advertising, they’re meant to connect with the viewer and entice them to want event more. Throughout the years, they have been placed in theaters across the country and adorned the bedroom walls of teenagers.

Whether it is a classic or a new box office hit, sit back in a comfy chair with your favorite snack and press play. Then, create. Now is your chance to share your favorite movie through the art of a movie poster. Show us how you connected to the film. Show us what the movie means to you. Redesign the poster using the medium(s) you prefer and give it your own interpretation.

AIGA Toledo's Annual Member Meeting
Communica

It's time for the AIGA Toledo Annual Members Meeting.

We will begin with a tour of our new meeting space located downtown in the Communica building. We will announce upcoming events for the year and have an open forum for questions and suggestions.

Following the business portion of the meeting we will go to the Black Cloister for social hour and a Drink & Draw. Pizza and sketchbooks will be provided.

How will the Drink & Draw work?

Each artist will place 1 noun and 1 adjective in separate buckets. Much like Card Against Humanity, one artist will draw a random slip of paper from each bucket. For example, hairy (adj) and vegetable (noun) are selected. All other artists will then have 3-5 minutes to draw an interpretation of a hairy vegetable in their sketchbook. The artist who drew the slips from the bucket will then act as a judge and select the winning drawing for that round. The buckets will then be passed to a new artist to serve as judge.

We will provide the Pizza, sketchbooks, and pencils. 21+ feel free to purchase drinks from the bar.

AIGA Toledo presents "What Comes Next is the Future," a documentary film about the web created by Bearded founder Matt Griffin. It is the story of Tim Berners-Lee’s creation – how it came to be, where it’s been, and where it’s going – as told by the people who build it.

In the film, Griffin knits together a narrative by mining dozens of conversations with important figures from throughout the web’s history including Jeffrey Zeldman, Denise Jacobs, Tim Berners-Lee, Ethan Marcotte, Chris Wilson, Lyza Danger Gardner, Eric Meyer, Irene Au, Alex Russell, Trent Walton, Val Head, Jonathan Snook and many more.

Aaron Draplin: Pretty Much Everything
BGSU Wolfe Center

Join us for a lively talk from Aaron Draplin, as he regales us with tales of his newly published book (Draplin Design Co.: Pretty Much Everything), graphic design and life's other curiosities.

ABOUT THE MAN

Aaron James Draplin is the founder of the Draplin Design Co., based in Portland, Oregon. He has created print, identity, and illustration work for Timberline Lodge, Woolrich, Patagonia, Nike, Mark Maron, and Sasquatch Festival, among others.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Esquire. Ford Motors. Burton Snowboards. The Obama Administration. While all of these brands are vastly different, they share at least one thing in common: a teeny, little bit of Aaron James Draplin. Draplin is one of the new school of influential graphic designers who combine the power of design, social media, entrepreneurship, and DIY aesthetic to create a successful business and way of life.

Pretty Much Everything is a mid-career survey of work, case studies, inspiration, road stories, lists, maps, how-tos, and advice. It includes examples of his work—posters, record covers, logos—and presents the process behind his design with projects like Field Notes and the “Things We Love” State Posters. Draplin also offers valuable advice and hilarious commentary that illustrates how much more goes into design than just what appears on the page. With Draplin’s humor and pointed observations on the contemporary design scene, Draplin Design Co. is the complete package for the new generation of designers.

This talk, hosted by BGSU GD & AIGA Toledo is part of AIGA Toledo's 10th Anniversary. The talk is free & open to the public.

Pulp
Seed Coworking

Unfortunately, due to the weather conditions this week AIGA Toledo is postponing the Pulp event scheduled for Thursday, January 31st. This event has been rescheduled to May 9th.

What designer do you know that don’t drool over gorgeous textures, brilliant colors, and thick paper stocks that demand attention? As creatives we intersect an exciting world of digital and physical experiences. Now more than ever we work in tandem to find the perfect accompaniment to an augmented world, often a physical printed artifact that carries the same quality and attention to detail given to our digital experiences. Indeed the user experience game does not end at the keyboard as every touch point and experience connected to a brand defines that brands voice in the public eye. Curious to find the next great stock, the perfect texture, or a killer new color that can push your project to the next level?
