For the July Toledo Web Professionals meeting, we are trying something different. Instead of just meeting to eat, drink and socialize, or having a discussion, we will be hosting a "clinic" where attendees get to learn a user experience method.

The method for July will be Card Sorting, based on the Rosenfeld Media book by Donna Spencer. See http://rosenfeldmedia.com/books/cardsorting/ for more information about the book and a lot of supporting material for card sorting.

See http://www.meetup.com/Toledo-Web-Design/events/58206902/ for details about the clinic and parking information.

If you have never done card sorting before, you will learn some of the basics and be able to apply it to one of your future projects. If you are a veteran card sorter, we would still like you to attend to share your experiences with the other attendees.

THANKS TO SEED FOR HOSTING THE MEETING!

See http://www.usabilityprofessionals.org/about_upa/ for more information.

You will also have an opportunity to network with other technology professionals following the session.

This is a free event. This event is targeted to an audience of professionals in the role of Business Analysts, Managers, and Developers that are interesting in learning more about SharePoint's out-of-the-box user interface, common pain points, and how to see and do more, faster.

The Mobile UX Summit: 27 tips and 2 case studies. A virtual event from Rosenfeld Media and Environments for Humans.

We asked six of the smartest people we know to provide practical advice on designing mobile experiences: Josh Clark, Brad Frost, Theresa Neil, Greg Nudelman, Jason CranfordTeague, and Mike Fisher. They'll spend a day covering case studies and tips from real-life projects, and answering your questions. You'll walk away with new mobile UX insight and skills—and recordings from the day's sessions to boot.

Hanson Inc. is sponsoring a physical location for this virtual event at no cost to our friends in the Toledo Region User Experience community. We have room for 60-70 people: however, about 30 people can sit at a table (for working), and the remainder would have chair seating towards the back. Therefore, seating will be on a "first come" basis. We should have some limited access to outlets for powering up.

We're asking everyone who wants to attend to register, so that we have space and service available.

SCHEDULE: The first speaker is scheduled for 10am, but you should plan to arrive before that, as early as 9am is fine. The event runs until 5pm.

FOOD/DRINKS: Hanson will provide beverages (coffee, tea, water and soft drinks) throughout the day. You could bring a lunch and put it in our fridge, or step out for lunch, or we have an option for you to have us bring in lunch from Panera Bread (salad/sandwiches) for $10. Lunch is scheduled for 1-2pm EST.

The third meeting of the new User Experience Design & Lean Product Development - NW Ohio meetup.

Join us for the third monthly meetup, the fourth Tuesday of August, and help us keep the momentum going.

Picking up where we left off, we'll take a deep dive into various mapping techniques surrounding the problem space, all informed by the exploratory research we learned about in July (and in cases you missed it, a video recording is available for a small donation).

In this mostly workshop-oriented meetup, we'll continue exploring our users goals and needs, pertaining to a specific problem space. Specifically, we'll explore the techniques of experience mapping, journey mapping, story mapping (and all their differences)… we may also explore affinity mapping if time allows.

As always, we'll bring the humor and wisdom! And, of course, food and drink will be provided.

Ignite UX Michigan is an evening of 5 minute talks on a range of user experience related topics in downtown Ann Arbor. It is a free event open to public thanks to our generous sponsors. Our first two years were enormously successful with over 140 people in attendance.

Several people from the Toledo region have attended this in the past. Let's organize a road trip to drive together (just like we do for World IA Day in A2). The Lean UX meet-up is organizing the road trip.

The list of speakers and topics for Ignite UX Michigan 2015:

Finding Your UX Roots: What Genealogy Taught Me About User Experience - Jodee Jernigan

UX Design for Startups - Sam Pierce Lolla

Infographics for the Non-designer - Chris Farnum

Why we can't have good things - usability testing your personal life - Xi Huang

The Psychology of Decision-Making - Scott Harris

A Shallow Dive into Deep Learning - Lavanya Kumar

UX for Alternate Realities - Christina York

A UX Designer, a Developer and a Project Owner Walk into a Bar (or techniques to develop user empathy with your developers) - Tracy Nagy

Remote story mapping - Mathias Burton

Why We Need More UX in Lower-Income/Minority Communities - Brittany Hutson

UX and More Effective Presentations - Izhar Buendia

Photography meets UX - Michael Nguyen

Leave Krogers at 5:30pm, back at about 10pm.

Connecting Toledo’s creative class with entrepreneurs, we will seek to create positive social impact through solving problems together.

During the event, business owners or aspiring entrepreneurs present their story along with real business challenges they are currently facing and a panel of design and business professionals will offer their feedback and advice.

The attendees will then have the opportunity to brainstorm and interact during dynamic breakout sessions, as they collaboratively explore ideas on how to overcome the obstacles.

Hosted by the Toledo Museum of Art at their beautiful Glass Pavilion, Design Briefs will be an experience you won’t want to miss.

Save the date for another User Experience conference, where we get together for an all-day event in Toledo featuring remote speakers from by Rosenfeld Media.

Product Managers and UX practitioners have a lot to offer each other - and a lot to learn from each other too.

If you’re in User Experience, you may be working with Product Managers more often, and some of your peers are even “graduating” into PM roles. You also know that products and services require more than great design and user research to succeed.

If you’re in Product Management, you’re hearing a lot about User Experience as well. You’re racing to move from launching features to creating experiences before your competitors catch on, and you know that UX can help.

The one-day virtual conference offers a unique opportunity to learn from six thought leaders who’ve explored the intersection of Product Management and User Experience Design:

Marty Cagan, Founder of the Silicon Valley Product Group

Jeff Gothelf, Author of Lean UX

Laura Klein, UX Designer, Product Manager, and Lean Startup expert

Christina Wodtke, Associate Professor, CCA

Jeff Patton, Author of User Story Mapping

Tomer Sharon, Senior UX Researcher at Google

Speakers will share real world stories and tips for building better collaboration between Product Management and User Experience.

Registration is now open for "User Insights for the Whole Team: Stop guessing what users need". Seats are limited, so be sure to register if you plan to attend!

Lean, agile, and startup processes emphasis creating customer value and satisfying user needs, both expressed an unexpressed. How do you get valid customer and user insights to guide decision making?

On April 12th, Darren Kall, a user experience design and strategy expert based in Dayton, will show us the value of direct contact with real users.

Learn the personal and corporate value of direct contact with real users

Recognize opportunities to connect with users and learn how to engage with them

Become empowered to put these techniques into practice and be confident you can do them well

Get resources about where to learn more so you can continue to get insights from users

These user experience techniques work for all varieties of products and services. You can apply them if your users are consumers, employees (for enterprise applications), residents (for government services), patrons (for a library), donors (for non-profits), and for many other audiences. It does not matter if the product or service is a website, mobile app, complex enterprise dashboard, or museum exhibit.

This talk will be useful for all members of a product team, not just for user experience specialists. Software developers, visual designers, project managers, business analysts, marketing leads and other members of IT/product teams are encouraged to attend. The whole team should be empowered with these techniques and have the opportunity to learn as much as they can about users. The better the team’s insights are about users, the more successful the product will be.

This event is a being organized BGSU ACM & Tech Toledo. Attending groups include Toledo Web Professionals & PMI WLEC.

This workshop is for developers and designers who want to know how to learn from customers and users, who believe that better design starts with better understanding, and who know that they can be empowered to make the right decisions with the right information.

Featuring Darren Kall, who gave an overview of the topic at the BGSU ACM / Tech Toledo event at BGSU on April 12th.

The Build Right: Maker Series brings relevant voices to the forefront through down-to-earth conversations about real-life experience along with “anything-goes” interactions. At each full-day workshop (10am – 5pm EST), you’ll have an opportunity to spend the day learning from an industry leader—and enjoy a lunch and happy hour together.

This quarter, NWSPUG branches out to feature Peter Morville, information architecture guru from Ann Arbor, for the Toledo stop on his "The Architecture of Understanding" world tour.

Overview of the talk: We think we're designing software, websites, and experiences. But we're not. We are agents of change. Our systems shape belief and behavior at scale. If we hope to be better, empathy for the user isn't enough. We must also wrangle with culture, governance, methods, metrics, and the false dichotomies of mind-body and plan-build, because the things we make are reflections of how we see and sort ourselves. In this spirited tour of information architecture, organizational strategy, and systems thinking, Peter Morville draws from his new book, Intertwingled, to reveal how everything is connected from code to culture.

The event will be FREE but we expect to sell out.

Customer interviews are an important part of ensuring that what you're designing, whether a product or service, actually meets the needs of your audience. In this $25 workshop, get ready to learn how to do customer interviews right -- ensuring that you hear what you need to hear from your customers, not what you want to hear.

Josie Scott, your expert instructor, will walk you through the principles and techniques of interviewing and observing customers/users for unbiased user experience research. She'll guide you through the process of developing "assumption persona" from your data, using affinity diagrams.

This will be an interactive session where everyone participates! Expect to walk away with the knowledge and skills to get more out of customer interviews in your next project.

In addition to a great learning and networking opportunity, Detroit UX will provide food & beverages.

The Lima Regional IT Alliance has again selected the Lima Veterans' Memorial Civic and Convention Center as the venue for the LRITA.org 2017 Tech Conference scheduled for Thursday, April 13, 2017.

The LRITA.org 2017 Tech Conference planning committee invites you to join us along with our many presenters and our region's IT vendors for this premiere IT professional event. This is where we all come together in sharing the knowledge.

LRITA will host keynote presenter: Darren Kall. Title & Summary: What to Do About Human Error in Security. Human error is responsible for contributing to 95% of security incidents. Each year the threats to enterprise security grow exponentially. We're failing to engage employees in protecting valuable company assets and their private information. Technology advances and employee education alone will not eliminate this risk. You will be shocked to learn that Security, IT, and HR are taking the wrong approach to human error. And it's only going to get worse unless we do something radically different. To combat human error takes a profound understanding of why human errors continue to occur. In this talk Darren will clarify the causes of human error, show how cyberspace hackers are using a deep understanding of the psychology of people to succeed, and he will give specific recommendations for changing your model of human error so that new mitigation strategies can be produced and implemented to reduce human error in security.

As we did at last year's conference, LRITA will be hosting a special opening presentation on cyber security. The presentation will be given by the FBI in partnership with the Toledo Infragard Members Alliance. During this presentation, attendees will be updated on the hows and whys businesses are targeted and exploited through cyber attacks.

Last year's event attracted more than 30 IT exhibitors and approximately 225 participants. The growing list of sponsors and exhibitors include: CorpComm Group, Virtual Technologies Group, Dell SonicWALL, City of Lima, TSC Communications, AIM Ecycling, The AME Group, CentraComm, Superior Credit Union, Uptime Solutions, WCOIL, Ohio Value Integration Services Inc., Sophos, ITsavvy, Hospitality WiFi, Tomorrow's Technology Today LLC, UIS Insurance & Investments, Com Net Inc., and Spectrum Enterprise.

After much ado, the Michigan User Experience Professionals Association is back! And we're kicking things off with Pamela Pavliscak on Monday, July 10th in Ann Arbor. Join us to learn more about the local chapter of UXPA International and give input on what you need to advance your career in UX.

What: Michigan UXPA presentation of "The Emotional Life of Internet Things" by Pamela Pavliscak

When: Monday, July 10, 2017, 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM

Where: U. of Michigan, North Quad, Room 2245, Ann Arbor

Why: Kicking off a revitalized UXPA chapter in Michigan (also serving the Toledo region)

The Emotional Life of Internet Things: The technology we use every day knows a lot about what we do: what we click on, where we go, who we follow. But so far, it doesn't know much about how we feel. That's changing. What will it be like when our internet things know how we feel? Let’s invent emotional machines for the human future we want.

On Oct. 12-14, 2017, Cincinnati will host the seventh annual Midwest UX Conference. The regional conference celebrates the growing practice of user experience design, and since its inception in 2011, has been held in Columbus, Grand Rapids, Indianapolis, Louisville and Pittsburgh.

“The conference is a reflection of the host city and the UX community within it,” said Jessica Schomaker, Cincinnati MWUX chair. “It’s really refreshing to get to go to all of these cities and see the UX communities there.”

The three-day event will feature hands-on workshops, keynote speakers, city excursions and networking events. Keynotes will be held at Memorial Hall, workshops will be at Cintrifuse and other locations in Over-the-Rhine and the closing party will be held at the Contemporary Arts Center.

Day one of the conference is workshop-based. Attendees will be able to go into the sessions and meet with international industry leaders who will teach skills needed for UX design.
Cincinnati is in the middle of redefining itself. “It's a reflection of what UX does — it improves user experience, just like Cincinnati is doing,” Jessica Schomaker.

“I moved here not too long ago and took a UX job,” Schomaker said. “The UX community in Cincinnati is remarkable, and the quality of people and conversations I’ve had are remarkable. It would be surprising to people outside of the Midwest that these conversations and groups are here because the perception is that good design happens on the coast. But good design is happening in the Midwest too.”

She feels that with the renaissance of OTR and downtown, Cincinnati is in the middle of redefining itself. “It’s a reflection of what UX does — it improves user experience, just like Cincinnati is doing.”

The Midwest UX Conference is entirely volunteer-based. With each new host city, new conference chairs are chosen from the local UX community, which allows each city to put on the best conference possible for the region.

“We get to highlight things that are happening in the city and highlight our favorite places,” Schomaker said.

From the curious business professional to the side gig enthusiast or technology expert, Connect Tech is an opportunity to discuss emerging trends in technology as they relate to your daily life.

Hosted at the Anderson’s, the event will center around roundtable topics that you can self-select based on your knowledge of the theme, blockchain. There will be discussion levels for everyone, from beginner to expert. This emerging trend will impact the way we vote, bank and store personal information online. It has been described as, “the future of the internet.” The blockchain is creating extraordinary opportunities for businesses to come together in new ways. It can help free up capital, lower transaction costs, speed up processes and provide security and trust.

From finance and banking to logistics and HR, blockchain will revolutionize the way in which we interact with the internet. If you deal with personal client and customer data, you will need to learn about blockchain’s impact on how you protect their personal information and Connect Tech is the perfect opportunity to be introduced to the topic, or delve deep into practical applications.
