General Information

The Toledo Area Linux Users Group meets once a month to discuss and promote awareness and usage of Linux and other open-source software and hardware.

Meetings are (usually) held on the third Saturday of each month from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. We currently meet at the University of Toledo in the North Engineering building, on the first floor in room NE 1022.

How do I get there?

See the attached map. Parking is in lot 19, just west of North Engineering. More details are available on our web site.

See also UT's page on department locations and facilities.

Meeting Notes

April is our yearly installfest event in cooperation with UT's ACM group and the Toledo Web Professionals. Together, we volunter to help new (and sometimes even experienced) users get set up with Linux and other open-source software distributions.

If you prefer a distribution (or even if you're not sure which one to pick), a volunteer will help you get the distribution installed and configured on your own machine, whether it be a desktop, laptop, or even an embedded platform, such as the Raspberry Pi.

We are also looking for volunteers to help out. If you're proficient in a particular distribution, please send an email to scook@talug.org with your full name, email, and which distribution you'd like to volunteer to provide help with. Lists of distros and volunteers will be posted on our website and handed out at the event.

PGP Key-signing Party

We will also be having a PGP key-signing party at the installfest. If you currently use a PGP key and would like to get it digitally signed by others at the meeting, please email scook@talug.org with your full name (as it appears on your key), any e-mail addresses associated with your key, your key fingerprint, and the full URL where your public key may be retrieved. Lists of keys will be handed out at the meeting for anyone participating.

Other Notes

Pizza and drinks will also be provided by TALUG for the event, and we will also be raffling off a few prizes: one (1) 256mb Raspberry Pi model B with case, and four (4) OpenPGP v2 smartcards. If you have something you'd like to donate to the group to be raffled off, please let us know.

Let's make this a big event! See you there!

React has received exponential growth among its user base in the last couple years but the speed at which front-end development libraries change can be daunting.

In addition to using React for the web, we will also look at React native and how once you learn React, you are ready to write native mobile applications (not a web view -- actually native).

About MaritzCX

MaritzCX started with the simple idea that businesses need more than scores and reports to meet their customer experience (CX) challenges in the 21st century – and that idea drove us to combine the deep expertise of a proven research leader with the speed and innovation of a modern tech startup. With MaritzCX, businesses constantly discover new insights about their customers. They always have instant access to the CX information and resources they need to drive organizational change. And they never have to guess about how to earn the loyalty of customers.

Registration is now open for "User Insights for the Whole Team: Stop guessing what users need". Seats are limited, so be sure to register if you plan to attend!

Lean, agile, and startup processes emphasis creating customer value and satisfying user needs, both expressed an unexpressed. How do you get valid customer and user insights to guide decision making?

On April 12th, Darren Kall, a user experience design and strategy expert based in Dayton, will show us the value of direct contact with real users.

Learn the personal and corporate value of direct contact with real users

Recognize opportunities to connect with users and learn how to engage with them

Become empowered to put these techniques into practice and be confident you can do them well

Get resources about where to learn more so you can continue to get insights from users

These user experience techniques work for all varieties of products and services. You can apply them if your users are consumers, employees (for enterprise applications), residents (for government services), patrons (for a library), donors (for non-profits), and for many other audiences. It does not matter if the product or service is a website, mobile app, complex enterprise dashboard, or museum exhibit.

This talk will be useful for all members of a product team, not just for user experience specialists. Software developers, visual designers, project managers, business analysts, marketing leads and other members of IT/product teams are encouraged to attend. The whole team should be empowered with these techniques and have the opportunity to learn as much as they can about users. The better the team’s insights are about users, the more successful the product will be.

This event is a being organized BGSU ACM & Tech Toledo. Attending groups include Toledo Web Professionals & PMI WLEC.

This quarter, NWSPUG branches out to feature Peter Morville, information architecture guru from Ann Arbor, for the Toledo stop on his "The Architecture of Understanding" world tour.

Overview of the talk: We think we're designing software, websites, and experiences. But we're not. We are agents of change. Our systems shape belief and behavior at scale. If we hope to be better, empathy for the user isn't enough. We must also wrangle with culture, governance, methods, metrics, and the false dichotomies of mind-body and plan-build, because the things we make are reflections of how we see and sort ourselves. In this spirited tour of information architecture, organizational strategy, and systems thinking, Peter Morville draws from his new book, Intertwingled, to reveal how everything is connected from code to culture.

The event will be FREE but we expect to sell out.

Toledo Web Professionals present: Real-time Messaging to Webapps from a Production Database.

WebSockets are a fast and efficient way to push data from servers to browsers on both desktop computers and mobile devices. Well-known examples include stock tickers, chat rooms (e.g. Slack), social media updates, and online games. Learn how WebSockets are used at the Jeep Wrangler plant for messaging and notifications for critical production activities.

This talk will demonstrate Java servlets with CometD, front-end jQuery code, and webapps currently being used to support production of 250,000+ Jeep Wranglers per year. By attending this talk, you will gain a better understanding of the constraints of an automotive assembly line and real-time messaging.

Bio -
David Johnson is a software developer at the Toledo South Assembly Plant, which produces the Jeep Wrangler. David splits his time between writing webapps, and automation. He uses Java, C#, C++, and Javascript. Ask him about barcodes!

This traveling cybersecurity workshop seeks to bring cybersecurity awareness to creators, developers, and businesses.

You've read the headlines about the latest hack affecting millions of web users and/or credit card holders, but did you know that, possibly and unwittingly, your own website, router or web connected device could be part of a botnet used in attacks?

What never ceases to amaze is how many businesses and individuals fail to protect themselves from the hordes of hackers working in a multi-billion dollar a year illegal industry. This workshop aims to awaken you to the many dangers as well as to offer real solutions to defending yourself and your business from what could be a disastrous breach of security.

• Profile of a "black hat" hacker and what they target

• Types of attacks and how they're achieved

• Legal aspects (liability, etc.)

• Social engineering

• Sources of timely security alerts

• Basic prevention

• Penetration testing

• Web site and web server security

• Desktop and Mobile security

• Anti-virus products comparisons

Truthfully, everybody who connects to the Internet should know this stuff, so come on over, and become a more savvy, secure, and responsible Internet user!

About Stuart Budden
Stuart Budden is an IT professional, co-owner and CEO of Nivsys Inc, and a professor teaching cyber security at Fanshawe College, in London, Ontario.

About Tom Germain
Tom Germain is CEO of Coder Scoop Inc., a web and mobile development company in London, who has long concerned himself with security on behalf of his clients and started this workshop in May of 2017.

Created in the shadows by ExpressionEngine expats, Craft CMS is an ultra flexible content management system that makes designers, developers AND clients happy. From custom fields, to Twig templates, Craft makes no assumptions about what your content could or should look like. Craft CMS is eye-opening for Wordpress developers, sanity-restoring for Joomla and Drupal developers, and makes building websites fun again.

Rachel Rine, our guest speaker, will be walking us through getting started with Craft and showing off some incredible examples of implementation in both the backend and in templating.

About Rachel Rine:
Rachel spends most of her time churning out code as an interactive designer/developer for Madhouse, where she enjoys optimizing performance, accessibility, and usable design. When she’s not grumbling about #serverstruggs, you can probably find her listening to econ podcasts, playing board games, and trying to keep her plants alive.

React is on fire! Companies around the world are trying to take advantage of the way React makes web applications fast, responsive, and easier to develop. That said, what about the API? If your API is slow or not optimized, that could severely effect your cool new React app and end up as the choke point for negative customer experiences.

In this talk, we'll build a React app that is driven by an API written in Rails, though we'll cover a great deal of best practices, examples, and considerations that can be applied to a client-server architecture written in any language.

You'll leave this talk with an understanding of the APIs role in React applications, things to look for when working with or building an API, and practical knowledge to take back into your workplace or personal projects.

Speaker Bio: Scott Radcliff is an expert software developer in the Toledo area. He's built web applications using numerous programming languages and technology stacks accomplishing a variety of tasks from the very simple to enterprise-grade. He enjoys building applications that help people do things that they previously couldn't, and he loves Ruby.

Scott is a freelance developer and is currently taking on new customers.

There are a lot of choices when building static sites. A new rising star is Gatsby: a static site generator built in React. You'll learn about the benefits of static sites in general and what makes Gatsby a compelling choice. Once we get over some hurdles with React we'll dive into topics such as data fetching from static files and CMSes like WordPress and Contentful, styling with styled-components, and continuous deployment with GitHub to Netlify and Amazon S3. You'll walk away with all the knowledge you need to build a site that feels almost instantaneous to your users and costs practically nothing to host.
