More Information:

As institutions explore the digital humanities and move toward digitizing collections, confusion about copyright and fair use issues hinders progress. If you are stymied and looking for help from copyright experts, this workshop is for you.

Expert facilitators for the Fair Use and Digitization Workshop are:

  • Brandon Butler, Director of Public Policy Initiatives, Association of Research Libraries
  • Jennifer Urban, Director of Samuelson Law, Technology & Public Policy Clinic; Assistant Clinical Professor of Law at University of California, Berkeley
  • David Hansen, Digital Libraries Fellow at Samuelson Law, Technology & Public Policy Clinic, University of California, Berkeley

Workshop participants will:

  • learn about copyright issues in the digital age
  • apply this knowledge to real-life scenarios during the workshop*
  • work together to develop a Fair Use Check List
  • learn to create copyright risk assessments for their own collections
  • learn when to consult legal counsel with fair use questions
  • learn to make judicious selections of copyrighted materials for digitization

Participants are invited to submit potential case studies based on their own collections and projects.

The workshop will be on the BGSU campus (in the Pallister Conference Room of the Jerome Library) on Monday, May 6 and Tuesday, May 7
